Not an especially stupid question
Why are most bicycles' drivetrain on the right hand side?
On the other hand, the answer demonstrates one of the stupid features of bicycles. Once you decide to make the drive sprocket a separate and easily replaced item attached to the rear hub, you have to find a simple way to attach it. Threading it on was a simple, cheap and dumb solution. Right hand (i.e. the most common type) threads work for this if the sprocket is on the right.
