Just seems like an after thought "oh people don't like round saddles, we'll just put a groove in the padding" rather than an actual piece of design.
That said, I'm not the lightest rider (usually somewhere between 86-88kg currently) - though that arione versus has now been passed around several clubmates on trial and they all said it was awful too.

Interesting enough I've had the same issues with the aliante vs! Ill thought out design I think
