You're still on Snow Leopard!?
Get onto Yosemite ASAP.
-
• #7854
Yeah mainly because it's stable and fast enough. I'm worried about things getting slow and bogged down.

Yosemite is pretty fast. Definitely slimmed down from lion and mavericks.

App Store reviews aren't exactly glowing!

I'm with soul.
I've also never once thought about writing a review of how non-intrusive it is. I imagine there's some selection bias going on there. -

(Crap 2009 work imac is on 10.10.3 and never been happier)

Ok fair points! Downloading as I type...

It also looks like it's mostly people whining about the death of iphoto. boo fucking hoo.

Ok so last week I mirrors my hdd to the new ssd. Presumably this update will only load itself on the boot drive (ssd) so if it all goes tits I can just boot from the hdd?

Yup.

Everyone is whinging about the keyboard - just like they did when the iphone came out and everyone had a blackberry. But now - no-one bats an eyelid typing on a flat touchscreen. If they had made a dual touchscreen laptop (i.e. two ipads higned together), I can't seen anyone complaining. I remember seeing this a few years back. I reckon this is where its going.
This.

I'm another Yosemite fan. It is far, far more stable than the last few OS which went before it.

I am not feeling any difference...

Re: the Macbook keyboard...
My Google Pixel 2 arrived today. It is utterly beautiful, as if riven from a single billet of aluminium. I can't tell you how pleasing it is to own and hold. IMO it blows any Apple laptop I've had a go with out of the water. The extra pound over the Macbook gives it a reassuring heft and the screen is just wonderful. It may 'only' be 239 pixels per inch compared to the Macbook's 226 but I'm convinced that you can tell the difference over a retina display. More pertinently it has a fantastic physical keyboard - which I think is better than a MBP's having had a go, the keys are closer together but not as close as the new Macbook - and a responsive touch screen too.
It's not just me, have a look at the Chrome OS Reddit and you'll find equally rave reviews. I'm posting this in the Mac thread because if you're happy with the functionality of a Chromebook (and many are, even if they think they aren't) you can save £250 over the new retina Macbook and get something which I honestly think you may well be happier with because it beats it on build quality, power, battery life, screen and connections.

Definitely.
Also to me that design looks pretty, I don't know, "clumsy".

nailed it

Nah don't be silly.
They're shit though (the laser things). We had one in the office the other week and it was really glitchy. The technology needs to improve a lot before they're a viable option IMO.
