• Hi all, I picked up an old Dawes last spring and recently got round to cleaning it up and getting it running but was wondering if any of you could help identify it?

Other than it being a Dawes, and apparently still with it's original paint, the only other markings are a frame number, 5 W 6847, stamped by the non drive side rear drop out, a sticker on the forks saying "55", and an almost completely rubbed off sticker where a tubing decal would normally be, see pictures below.

The front mech and downtube shifters seem to be match and are Simplex Prestige I think, whereas the rear mech has been swapped for a more modern Shimano one, presumably to accommodate the rather large range of the also seemingly newer 5 cog cassette.

Any ideas or info would be appreciated , to my eye I originally thought it was an old tourer, but on closer inspection I noticed a lack of mountings for racks, and that the seat stays are particularly slim, which now makes me think this was an audax bike or something similar as while not being lightweight is definitely not on the heavy side.

There doesn't seem to be much info on Dawes 55's but judging by the old fashioned headbadge I'm guessing this is a mid-70's era bike, anyway let me know what you think.

    Cheers Kev.
