  • Awoke hungover craving the f&c. Got train to Brighton. Full English may have to suffice. Great weather to be unemployed!

  • lucky you
say that again on Thursday about 10 am !

you are aware there are good fish and chips in london aren't you

  • ^^ doing unemployment right!

  • no, should have cycled to brighton.

  • I thought that on the way down "will definitely ride it next time".
There are great chippies in London, hell yeah, but Sydenham's beaches are crap!

  • Was down there couple weeks ago. There's a nice place on the pier. Do takeaway or eat-in.

  • Seapebbles in Hatch End is splendid - went with my Mum and my daughetr Isobel.

Lovely Tatare sauce, all the food was cracking

  • If you're ever near Bridlington in a little town called Sewerby, this is the place you need to go;http://www.sewerbyfisheries.co.uk/
The most exceptional and very English fish and chips I know. YORKSHIRE! YORKSHIRE!

  • Seagulls Fish & Chips. £6 for cod, chips and a drink. Not the cheapest but they served me at half 9 and Christ they were good.

  • Fishers is brill....re-opened in April........it is,however in Fulham,not Putney.

  • I want chips for lunch :/

  • SE1 = olleys

Haddock has been catch of the day for about 7 years.

I haven't had fish there but the chips are never great - I'm looking for somewhere else but at the moment I can't even find a kebab/burgers/etc shop to compete!

golden union on poland street still up there
handy for anyone working in oxford street area, well worth a visit, delicious

  • Brockley's Rock are rocking my world these days. Amazing.

  • @dicki
    According to that listicle,

    GOLDEN UNION

This Soho chippie has the sleek and shiny look of a hot newcomer, but it’s been doing its thing for more than 150 years. In this case, practice has made almost perfect ...

wtf? It opened in about 2008. I know the guy that started it, I knew the restaurant before it, a low-rent wagamamma ripoff called Soba, run by this weird looking dude who ran a fish and chip 'restaurant' there before that, it was like a shit fish & chips version of Garfunkel's, atourist trap kind of place as it was so near Oxford Street.

It's so weird that they think Golden Union has been around for 150 years.

Their fish cakes are absolutely MARVELLOUS btw, as is their tartare.

  • Where are all the proper chippies on that list? Would have been nice to see The Fryers Delight getting some recognition, or even the Seashell at Lisson Grove even though its a bit pricey.

Poppies in Camden is just round the corner from me, and it's aimed squarely at the tourists. Most locals go to Pang's up on Kentish Town Road.

Anyone near Maida Vale? George's Fish Bar on Shirland Road used to be fantastic value. He used to have a sign which said that if you could find a bigger portion of cod and chips in london for the same money, he'd give you a fiver.

  • All of those look like tourist recommendations. I'll stick to looking for lots of award nominations in the windows eg Toffs in Muswell Hill.

  • toffs alright. Nautilus by fortune green alright.

both beaten hands down by Masters on Waterloo Road. £6.50 for a "large" takeaway, which was too much for two of us last time. Fresh and hot and tasty. The line of cabs parked outside every evening also tells you it's good value for money.

  • Their fish cakes are absolutely MARVELLOUS btw, as is their tartare.

    Who gentrified Skully?

  • I went to toffs recently for lunch while working round the corner.
It was rubbish imho; greasy, lank chips and as generic a battered sausage as anywhere else but with soggier batter. Fuck all chips for the price either. Can't comment on the fish cos I can't eat the stuff.
That said the seemingly endless queue out the door every evening suggests I'm wrong.

If you're in the area can I suggest AMG Costa on Colney Hatch Lane. It's certainly the best I've had in the area and costs bugger all. Boss man in there is an absolute legend as well.

  • Near there, maybe the same owners I suppose. The one I am thinking about is on Shirland Road, near the back of the Mozart Estate.

That bakery next door used to be our regular mid-morning stop when I was landscaping. Decent coffee, before the word "Barista" had appeared in London, and very fine chelsea buns.

  • Where are all the proper chippies on that list?

    Well said, @Bad_Science.

  • Golden Hind near where I work in Marylebone has been going for 100 years. It's run by a Cypriot family, the owner is a friendly old chap called Mr Christou who often pops out for a chat with the customers.

  • The Fryers Delight gets a big thumbs up from me too.

Taste More Fish & Chips in Stockwell is also better than average - except for a dodge battered sausage I had last time put me off

the golden union on poland street may well be getting a visit

happy fish and chip day one and all
