• I wonder if men can effectively try to counteract street abuse like this?:

A while back I found myself rolling up to some lights in secondary and a large van with men in front were 'cat calling' at a woman walking near, sort of the other side of me so I was physucally in the middle of this harrassment.

Without really thinking hard about it I (with demonstrative sarcasm) loudly said carry-on style stuff to them like 'Ooh you cheeky, in your dreams, you saucy lads' etc etc, as if they were harrassing me, a middle aged man, in an attempt to try to embarrass and make them feel uncomfortable. Put the focus on them.

It sure wiped the smiles off their faces and shut them up.

I should hasten to add I don't think I was being homophobic. I've been harrassed about my sexuality in the past (once abused as a group at West forum drinks and it was horrible) and I really loathe homophobia, even though I may well have committed it in the past and have always regretted deeply if something I've said was inadvertantly homophobic - it's all around us all the time and was totally normalised in the media as I was growing up.
