Old wiring may well be compliant with the code that was in force at the time, but that does not mean it is adequate now.
When I was a kid I lived in a 300 year old timber-framed cottage out in the sticks. Back in 1948 that village was connected to the electricity supply, and to get people using that electricity the house each house was fitted with one socket.
40 years later and several additions to the house and all the other sockets in the house were all running off that original 1948 spur. It was an accident waiting to happen, so the place got a complete rewire.(several other issues were found, to be fair, such as the lighting circuit in one room that somehow bypassed the main circuit breaker for the whole house. Or the socket with live and neutral reversed.)

I dont mean to have started a forum war with the electrics question. Its only wires. Everyone's feedback is appreciated but I think we'll get a rewire & new consumer unit put in before we get the floors and kitchen done. It'll be out of the way then and won't be an albatross when we eventually sell.

^^ #repped
I've just made sure that in my house, the wiring is safe. I do have a mix of old and new cable colour codes, however, this is labelled clearly on the consumer unit. I've tested mine thoroughly for continuity and insulation (actually borrowed a PAT tester from work to do this). I'm not a spark, but an electronic engineer.

Well in other news I got my AIP today so going to put an off in tomorrow.
Pleasantly surprised with what they have offered me actually. If I don't get this it does give me more scope in what I'm looking for.

We've found an absolute WRECK of a cottage in Blackheath.
Being sold by the council because the old person is being taken into care and has no next of kin so the council are selling on her behalf to fund her care.
Estate agent said it was worth putting in your lowest offer (because of the state it is in). He also suggested that dealing with the LA is really easy. And usually goes along the lines of:- Property is listed at £X
- Offer is made at £X-20%
- LA show their cards and explain the minimum value they would accept.
- Offer is made at minimum LA viable cost.
SOLD.
And it is a STEAL!
After our sale and costs we would have enough change to do a rear extension, rewire throughout, new boiler and all plumbing, new kitchen, new bathroom and cosmetics.I properly love it, and so does our lass.
Got my AIP sorted, going to be on the phone at 9:01 tomorrow to try and get this in the bag.
We wanted a serious project and we might just get it.
- Property is listed at £X

I don't want anyone to know about it until it is MINE!my little secret for new
-
• #8435
@WjPrince can't wait to see it - also because that means it will be in the bag.
What's your theoretical plan for the period during the renovations? Is it habitable while you do the work?
-
• #8436
did you cancel the viewings or go for the kill?
Also my boss is talking about redecorating his flat, I'm going to send him the link to your flat as an example of something nice. Congratulations, you're famous/ish.

I found it too. Super tricky. It's on rightmove, at the price you listed your old place, in the area you mentioned, and described as internally knackered.

Ah, found it. That's not cheap or huge, the area must be great. I didn't realise a terraced house could be a cottage.
That's industrial language and there's nothing wrong with industrial language.
