• Looks great! Can't wait to see it built!

  • @Dakin I'm gonna get some wider risers for my fixieskidda but not for this.

    I have a few gear related questions, as mentioned previously I have no idea what I'm doing;

I've pretty much decided I want a full black groupset for this. Black 105 (5800) looks good and is cheap. Is this the best out there for the money or should I be looking at something else? If I can get something alot better for not alot more money I'd rather do that.

Currently the Hed has a 9 speed cassette(or is it a screw on block?) Can this easily be changed to 11 speed? or will I have to stick with 9 speed and therefor use a sora rear derailer or something?

Am I going to run into any issues fitting a modern group to this frame set?

  • 9 speed won't be a screw-on block. If it's shimano it'll be a Hyperglide, which is 8/9/10 compatible. Not sure you'll be able to get an 11 on there though. Rear derailleurs tend to be speed independent (again, not sure about 11 speed) as all the cable pulling is done by the shifters, so you can mix and match quite happily.
    In-depth Sheldon article here.

  • If there are nine sprockets, it'll be a cassette rather than a freewheel.

Assuming it's Shimano then 8, 9 & 10 speed all use the same freehub, but 11 is different. Contact HED to see if an 11 speed freehub is available and could be retro-fitted.

5700 is almost as good value as 5800.

What's the rear OLD? If it's 126mm then you might have an issue with the top sprocket fouling the chainstay.

It's possible that it being a 650 frame, might give you the same problem: I'm thinking of the chainstays being quite short.

  • OK, Thanks for the info guys.

I believe the current cassette is a 9 Speed DA.

Hed only appear to do a 11 speed conversion kit for the newer stuff but I will contact them to see if they have anything.

So would a 11 speed 105 derailer work fine with a 10 speed cassette? or even the current 9 speed one I have?

    Rear OLD is 130mm

^^I'll give that sheldon page a read at lunch

  • Easier just getting a 10 speed group

  • Any black 10 speed group recommendations?

  • Oh my. That's an absolute beaut.

Stop procrastinating and get some parts on it and get riding.

  • Would the 5800 chainset work fine with the rest of the 5700 group?

  • LBS is ordering me a 5700 group with a 5800 chainset and pricematching merlin. Should be here early next week. I could do with a old flite if anyone has one? not too fussed on condition as I have a mint one on my beater that I can swap onto this

  • Proper good. All the right decisions made. Heds look LIVE.

Can't believe you would bin this without even riding.

    Also, do not repaint!

  • I feel I have to say that again too - don't change the paint! It looks so damn good

  • The paint is staying, for now, I have a sneaky suspition that one of the small marks in the paint around the internal cable routing hole on the top tube may infact be the start of a crack... For now I'm just going to ride it and hope for the best. Should this turn out to be a crack i'll obviously have to do something about it, which would mean it would need painting, or try and find another 650c road frame that wasn't made for a child.

  • You're after a stepped ferrule, I tried a few places unsuccessfully so ended up raiding a buddy's spares box. Best of luck! SJS tend to stock them if the real world fails you.

Also, it looks amazing. Really well done.

  • Looks so good! And looks in proportion too... Awesome.

  • Looking good!

As 6pt said, SJS have stepped ferrules
    http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/stepped-chrome-ferrules-37-mm-insert-for-5-mm-gear-outer-pack-of-4-prod5267/

they worked for me but they're made for 5mm outers, so a bit loose. let me know if you find a place selling them for 4mm outers.

  • I had the same issue, ended out using the plastic casing from a 5mm brake cable as a shim. Nice and snug now.

    Rad bike also.
