• Quarq are basically a more expensive P2M

  • As a basic training tool a Powermeter helps improve the benefits of training by improving the quality of intervals/efforts.

You still have to design the programme. There is so much conflicting advice I'd say a decent coach and HRM for the first year would be better than a power meter and DIY.

  • Power Meter Handbook by Joe Friel seems to share a lot of content and is a bit more concise.

  • I'd buy a PM, and a generic training plan. Its possible you'd get more out of having a proper Coach. In fact for improvement/dorrah is probably the best. But a PM is for life.

Plus you can use Your PM for loads more than just accurate training.

    like dick waving

  • It's very hard to coach oneself.
I would get a powermeter though and then read a few training bibles.

Training is pretty simple in the end of the day. But it takes a good person to implement it effectively.

  • lol at the price.

  • Still the same crappy Exustar pedals. No thanks.

  • I was adept at waving my Dick long before I bought a Power meter.

I could probably Train really well by HR alone. But pacing yourself up a tough Climb by HR is fecking tricky compared to how easy it is with Power data availible. Making sure you're not giving too much in Wind swept pacelines is another example.

Then theres dialing position. Try climbing at a percieved leg effort perched on the nose of Your saddle. Glance at Your Power output. Push back into the saddle, try and hit the same percieved leg effort. Glance again. Your powermeter will even tell you where to sit....

  • Cheers guys, yeah, the Hunter Allen book was the one I remember being mentioned, might give that a read first and figure it out. I'll keep an eye on p2m/quarq prices too...I was wanting to go the powertap route, but I'm not keen on cannibalising my almost new flo30 just yet.

The position dialling thing sounds pretty cool!

  • If you read the 'Training With a powermeter book'. You will definitely buy a powermeter. Those guys should be on Commission.

  • More like; if you're a boring enough cunt to make it the whole way through this book, then you're probably the kind of person who will enjoy training with a power meter....

  • I read it cover to cover.

But then I used to read polymer related patents 9 hours a day for a living.

.....I may also be a boring cunt.

  • Most cyclists are cunts to be fair.

  • ^ fair point

I would say that the majority of people trying to take racing seriously would benefit more from a coach than a power meter. Coaching (not talking about training plans etc) can be expensive though.

  • How many powermeters do you have now?

  • No, your a cyclist!

  • A mate has a kinda online Coach. Hes here in Norway and his Coach is in the UK. So initially he starts With the sort of training plan you can get for cheaps online. But then each couple of weeks he sends in his performance data on said plan, and the Coach does a quick adjust for the following period With feedback.

Trouble With this is thats its Reliant on you being able to give the Coach as much data as possible.

  • I think theres a big difference between being 'serious about racing', and 'serious about riding'.

Maybe my opinion is seated in me being the latter.

  • That's how most coaching works. It's not like you pay someone to ride with you.

  • I get that. But this seems like a cheap semi personalised option.

If I'm paying monies I want someone riding a moped next to me on Climbs. Telling me I'm a beast, and handing me fresh animal adrenilin glands to chew on.

  • Unfortunately I can't afford Rapha levels of support.

Who am I kidding? I have the best support crew EVAH!
