Just picked up this wheelset on the Bay. Mavic CXP33 rims laced to Ultegra hubs. Was planning on using them either for this build or on my tourer. Would they be a good CX wheelset?

Two black-sheep spokes in each wheel?
eBay used wheels? Good luck. Good wheels on paper (great hubs). Hopefully well build and in good condition.

Yeah I spotted afterwards....In description claims the hubs spin well and that they are true on his truing stand. Also loads more photos showing the rim is in good condition. Got them for £77 before postage which seems decent.

The black spokes indicate where the valve hole is. It's just a detail.
Should work well on either setup -

That's encouraging cheers Simba. Haven't seen that before

If you plan to race or ride in mud get cantilevers. The Tektros are excellent with a change of brake pads and a bit of time spent setting them up.
If not racing, get mini Vs. The shorter the arm length the better the clearance at the rim but you get less power.

No problem. I should also clarify that I was trying to say that the wheels will work well for both cross and touring, and I forgot to say: "amazing frame, great project, very envious, following!"

J.Dennis: I may try a bit of racing in the winter not sure yet. Think i'll go for the Mini-vs for the time being as they are cheap and may upgrade to some decent cantis when it gets muddy.
Simba: Haha thanks very much.

Thinking of going for this chainset and swapping out the big ring, it's a campag veloce and my understanding is that as it's 10 speed it'll work with a SRAM 10 speed set up despite having campag written on it. Let me know if i'm wrong.
-

It'll work. I'm not sure it's a great idea.
If you're going to mix it up it's more common to run sram/shimano chainsets with Campag shifters+mech. After all it's the shifters that are the nice bit.
What year are those cranks? Post 2011 they're probably Power-Torque. Have a google if that if you want to put yourself off Campag chainsets! And they any Campag chainset needs specific chainrings (rather than the standard shared between Sram and Shimano).

I would say forget SRAM and get 11 speed 105
-
• #38
I sort of agree because it's great, and because it's almost impossible to collect a groupset with everything, even cables, for the price of brand new 5800.
But it would require other wheels -
• #39
Late night foruming I forgot about the spacing, what about 5700 10 speed? Also cheap.
-
• #40
Well I already have the SRAM force shifters. Also I wanted to try SRAM and I'm not bothered about having a full matching group. As much as I would love to I simply can't afford it I'm accumulating parts for this slowly and as cheap as I can mostly from the bay.
The campag chainset is £20 so I'm tempted to go for it as long as it will work in the mechanical sense even if not in a style sense. -

Fair enough, sorry for doubting!

Haha don't be. I rely upon the input of others

https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CSSHOEMCX50/shimano-fc-cx50-10-speed-chainset
this is quite a cheap cross chainset at £50
-
• #44
^ this.
That's the same price as the Campag chainset and a new ring. Those Shimano rings are probably better than any sub £50 chainrings anyway.

Hmm hadn't spotted that. What BB would I need? The only thing is it's really ugly...(I know I said I didn't care about style 5 posts above) but looks like it would be a good option.
-
• #46
It'll be a nice cheap hollowtech II bb
-
• #47
What about tigra compact? Prettier rings, and silver will wear better if you are going off road in terms of heel rub.
-
• #48
More tempted by the tiagra one. Greater range of gears would suit me better I think. Those hollow tech BBs are really cheap so seems like an all round good option.
-
• #49
with code extra7 for 7% off it's £54, but you'd also need a £20 GXP bb
-
• #50
I actually think I may have a spare GXP BB knocking around in the parts bin. Will check after work. Then the apex may be a good option.
Ok so general consensus is for the Mini Vs? Suits me as they're pretty cheap. Probably get those adjustable noodles too.
In other news the force shifters arrived in the post today, they look and feel really good.
