They make a good whittling/cooking/camping knife. If you're bending the blade you're doing it wrong! My last one was sharpened to wafer thinness before I lost it. They're so cheap it's worth buying 2 just so you can practice carving by reshaping the handles..
I think I was given my first one when I was 6 or 7.
Prefer my Benchmade now though. Takes a great edge really quickly and the lock works perfectly and allows you to flick it open if you feel so inclined.
