Or possibly because aeros have little effect up hill?
(suggesting that the HEDs are significantly better everywhere else?) -
• #153
Neither of those things are true, though, so that's unlikely.
-
• #154
Dat marketing and shouty decals though. Adds 10W ATW for each square centimetre of decal visible on HED wheels.
-
• #155
Because the HED rims weigh 460 grams and the FLo 560... my knees are always happier when I ride lighter rims on demanding terrain
-
• #156
Both the Flo30 and the HED roll and corner in a very similar manner, but the Flo definitely has an aerodynamic (or, I admit, convincing placebo) effect once you start shifting that the HED does not.
I did a lol. Sorry. That'll be the extra 200g of imported flywheel effect.
Any magic Fl0 have managed with a 30mm rim is surely totally ballsed up with a bulging 25mm tyre. They're likely to be less aero than a wide rim with parallel brake tracks no?
-
• #157
Not necessarily, no. It'll increase the front area, but provided that the CdA figure drops by a sufficient amount the overall drag will be reduced. Whether it does or not is another question, but an extra 2mm of width could easily be compensated for if the drag coefficient is significantly lower.
-
• #158
...but provided that the CdA figure drops by a sufficient amount the overall drag will be reduced.
But that wont happen. They're designed, modelled and tested with 23mm tyres.
^ this is the profile of the flo30. It's designed for a smooth transition between the non-parallel brake tracks using a 23mm tyre.

At the end of the day it's a 2.2:1 aerofoil at best, never going to be astonishingly aero.
-
• #160

Anything over a few degrees of yaw and the 'bulging' tyre isn't really bulging at all on the upwind side.
-
• #161
Well in that specific case they're no better than regular parallel-brake, narrow rims.
-
• #162
I own both wheelsets, you are welcome to try them yourself, back to back- I could bring them with me to Bespoked if you are attending?
-
• #163
That's very kind but I refuse to ride them unless you fit 23mm tyres.
-
• #164
;-)
-
• #165
They've got 24's on - close enough?
-
• #166
I'm going for the next order tomorrow - a set of flo 30s.
Anything I should be aware of to make sure I get my order in?
-
• #167
Do you think that there is any point in getting flo30s, ignoring the braking surface and having them built up with disc brake hubs?
-
• #168
-Setup your account beforehand, so you can order quickly.
-Why flos on a disc hub? you're lugging around a brake sidewall, more weight etc. (but aeros, I know). -
• #169
Indeed, that is my slight quandry, it seems a bit pointless, especially for the 30s , but I would quite like a new pair of wheels and they are hard to choose
-
• #170
you're lugging around a brake sidewall, more weight etc.
Do you think they would actually cut any material if they thought you weren't going to rub the sides with bits of rubber?
-
• #171
Well...fair point. The additional rotational weight is almost negligible for most users applications. Ultimately, they have a good profile, and are quite strong too, I curb jump mine quite comfortably.
-
• #172
Wow, that happened fast!
I have to say though I'm really impressed with flo so far, they've already come back to me and assured me they will combine shipping, refund one of my postage costs, as I ended up having to order twice and potentially switching one of the wheels if at all possible!
-
• #173
I ordered the 30s. Had no problems other than needing to act fast as the window of opportunity closes pretty fast.
-
• #174
I think the 30s will always go a little slower than the discs/90s/60s as I'd imagine the demand for them is flatter across the year but as race season is starting for cycling and triathlon people will be buying race stuff now...
Still blown away by the response from them, i've only ever heard good things about their customer service, now to hope they arrive before 20th May!

I was mostly interested in getting wide rimmed wheels without paying an excessive amount, but if there are aero benefits as well I am not complaining.
Zipp 101s were shown to outperform "across yaw the 50mm deep Mavic Cosmic Carbone SLR wheels". And I think the 30s should act in a similar fashion. Not that I race nor am I in good condition, but still. At least I can say the wheels are fast!
Flo30 is ~530g, HED is ~470g, are you basing this decision on 120g over both wheels?
