  • Finished yet?

  • Not finished, but I have the bike!

Had a quick spin on the turbo last night (hence the turbo tyre on the back) and wrapped the bars this morning. Need to work out how to make the saddle level and take the bottle cage off the saddle to readjust it. I have a half marathon in the morning so the first outing won't be until Sunday!

I'm slightly concerned the spindle reducer seems to rotate with the left crank arm but assume this is normal...?

  • That bike is a weapon!

  • Oof that looks fast!

  • Good God.

  • My word.

  • now with matching tyres, a level saddle and a garmin mount.

Time to go running, am cycling there but a it's about to piss it down and I'm not leaving this outside!

  • That looks amazing. Are there any bikes on the market with a thicker seat tube /post?

  • Not sure, but I don't think so, the other TRI "super bikes" the falco v and the dimond being the two others I considered, are heading towards not having seat posts, but to my mind then it's heading away from looking like a bike! Plus they're not easily available in my size!

  • Haha, the frame makes that (standard?) chainring looks tiny!

  • holy feck that's tasty...

  • Looks like a TIE fighter.

  • It rides like one too!

First ride today, only 40km, heading out into the wind for a bit before having a nice long blast with the tail wind, with a few short climbs in there as well.

First impressions are that its a comfortable positon (its should be as ive replicated my posiotn on my old bike on this one) and the head wind was good for trying to push out threshold power for a decent amount of time.

Its a little harsh at the front going over gaps in the tarmac but the back end is very good at not transmitting those bumps or indeed some of the rougher chipseal I was riding over up to the back. its very stable at speed and the di2 makes for lovely gear changes. together it felt like i was in a video game!

The integrated box on the top tube is a little disappointing both because its surprisingly small (today it had a tube, inflator, canister and some patches and was full) but also because it is made of a hard plastic so it rattles quite a bit as well.

I cant wait to get some appropriate wheels on this, and in some more normal conditions.

I've taken the nose cone of to have a look at the charging port as I have a charger now, i don't think there is anything i want to do with shifting at the moment, but i'll do a bit of reading about what the options are!

  • Sweet.

  • Wow! Amazing.

I was surprised when I originally read that they used it for storage and not for water like the Shiv. Also, if they had to make a custom storage box for Rinny, then that should have been a clue that the existing one was too small.

  • Frustrating but not the end of the world, if I was really lean with race day spares, 1 lever, tube and gas I'm fairly confident I could get that and enough gels for a 70.3 in there, and as I have no plans to go longer this year its not like its a pressing issue.

I think from what I've read the early prototypes had hydration packs in them but there were some IP ownership issues with specialized - I'm surprised that Specialized could own putting a water bottle in the frame, especially as this was a combined bento box/water bladder but I don't know any detail.

by the looks of it on slow twitch, Felt are relatively happy to share the cad file for Rinny's custom one, I unfortunately have no idea about how to get access to a 3d printing machine...

  • well I've asked the guy on slowtwitch for the file, so this may happen.

still hunting for wheels, i think my first choice is a set of Flos 90/90 or maybe 90/Disc, but if that fails then a set of either Wheelsmith 60s, or a set of Walker Brothers Fleet 86s...

  • just receied a zipp vuka BTA mount, which is about as heavy as a boat, but combined with a gorilla cage should keep a bottle nicely in place and put my garmin in a comfortable place to see and still keep the pointy bit of my helmet in the right place.

  • Felt have come back and said that the calpak is bonded to the frame and if I remove it then I void the warranty on the frame, not really something I want to do one a £3k frame = sadface.

will just have to stuff some gels in my pockets then...

  • Quite pleased with the Zipp vuka BTA mount, in this position it does require undoing a bolt to get the garmin on/off, but it keeps it the bottle and garmin nice and low and out of the way of my arms, someone in the US is selling an adapter to allow it to be combined with an xlab torpedo, I might have to get in touch with @mdcc_tester to see if he can sort out a version for me, as at $90+ postage it seems expensive for what it its.

Will hopefully be making a wheel purchase next week, and once they've been delivered then I will be finished!

My Garmin mount is likely to be £500, could come down as low as £200 each if 10 people get on board :-)

  • I was more wondering if your machinist could replicate the thing in the first picture...?

If you reckon it would be £200 or £500 then i'll probably just make do with standard bottles!

  • Your best bet for the stick with four holes in it would be Fibrelyte, they would probably want ~£30 for something like that.

  • What wheels did you end up going with?
