  • Either of these steps could have removed track points, saving as TCX might have worked because it removed less points? Did you use a different exporter/converter?
"Create route in ride with gps
    Export as GPX"

Also, settings on the Course allow you to 'Lock to Road' on the 800. I presume the 810 has similar.

As far as I'm aware TCX is just a GPX with extra shit like HR, power, cadence stuff tacked on.

  • I've been offered an 800 for 510 money, new. Is the 810 really that much better?

  • than what?

the only major difference I can see between the 800 and 810 are auto calibration with power meters, and the ability to connect/upload with a mobile, oh and if you have vectors it unlocks a load more analytical data.

  • Nope, exported using the rwgps function.

I just stick to TCX, no more problem.

  • I might try a TCX next time then. Not this weekend though.

  • What? Nothing else I've seen has come close.

  • taps Andy's nose

  • Export as GPX
    Save in new files folder
Give 810 to me Julie to go and ride the course
Find out afterward that the GPX was saved as points which the Garmin was then meant to navigate between using the installed OSM set, but didn't- instead the 810 tried to straight line between points leading to total confusion

I've only ever had that problem once (out of hundreds), and it was because I had exported the GPX 'Route' rather than the 'Track' - and yeah, it was practically useless.

  • Yeah GPX routes are different to GPX tracks.

Routes and tracks are sets of GPS information designed to help you in your navigation. There are a few key differences to keep in mind when using routes and tracks.

Routes are pre-defined paths created from a group of location points entered into the GPS receiver in the sequence you desire to navigate them.
Location points can be user generated waypoints or points of interest that have been loaded from a map or from a Garmin program
Routes are created on the computer and/or on the device
Tracks act like breadcrumb trails, allowing you to see where you or another individual traveled in the past. This allows you to navigate a path previously taken.
Tracks contain track points, not waypoints or points of interest
There are two different types of tracks:
    Active Track Log:
Contains track points for your current activity
Can be cleared at the start of a new activity
Can be set to wrap around (overwrite older track points as device runs out of memory)
Can be saved as a “Saved Track”
    Saved Tracks:
Created typically from the active track log
Can have a limit to the maximum amount of track points based on the device (for example: 250, 500, 10,000 track points maximum)
Creation can result in points being consolidated (on device) or truncated (from computer to device) depending on the source, to meet above device track point limitations
Creation can result in data removal based on the device (for example: date, time, speed and accessory data)

  • Yeah, most of those sort of pages seem to have several paragraphs of weird differences which will bore the average user into submission - then tuck the conclusion in at the bottom...

99% of people want a GPX Track. Unless you know what you are doing, GPX Routes are not useful and should be avoided.

Incidentally, IIRC, my single attempt to use a TCX resulted in the turns being announced in some odd text format when I had already passed the junction. Almost certainly my cock up, but I've used GPXs exclusively ever since without a problem.

  • Yeah, that's why I've not bothered with anything other than GPX tracks. They just work.

  • People moan about the speed and the interface - but I've put up with the 705 for the past 4 years so it can't be any worse than that.. right?

  • They're all better than the 705.

  • I grew to love mine. Even if it was a dick.

  • Cheat on it then kill it in the face with fire.

  • It's sleeping now anyway - this cruel world can't hurt it anymore.
The port died after the last, wet/wind/sleet ride in Mallorca. I just about managed to get the datas off it after 3 days of drying out.

  • Any issue fitting to a quill stem? Or a 26mm bar? Thanks

  • So, my edge 200 has been taking longer and longer to find my position. Yesterday it didn't find my position at all. Is there anything I can do to mend it before contacting garmin/wiggle? If I do have to contact someone do you think I should go to wiggle or straight to garmin, it is less than a year old.

  • Factory reset.

In some weather conditions my garmins take an age to lock on. Annoying.

If it persists get wiggle to do the grunt work for you.

  • No the mounts come with different size o rings to cater for different bar sizes.

  • Thanks bud. Appreciate it

  • New Garmin update released today looks interesting, some new visuals

  • New Garmin arrived - actually find the interface of the 800 a bit easier to get to grips with than the 810 I was borrowing.

Had to force it to mount on my Mac by holding down the lap button though - is that a common problem?
