  • Can anyone recommend a good pet/child tracking GPS unit? ie. a little sealed GPS tracker that will report a live location to a website or phone for a number of days?

  • Cheers, that seems a bit more detailed than I remember it. Is there an easy way to view these maps on PC/online so I don't have to try and use my Garmin to see how detailed they are? Or is it just the same as the map on http://www.openstreetmap.org

You can download the map installer for windows and use garmins basecamp to view the maps.

  • So bikeroutetoaster is er... toast.

I use Strava for routes on-road but the maps are useless for trails. What do people use for planning off-road riding?

  • Ridewithgps.com with the OSM Cycle map layer - Wonderful

  • Cheers. Looks ideal.

  • 1+ on ridewithgps too, I use them for everything, Strava for road routing (although I did managed some offroading quite by accident with Strava).

  • Looks pretty much like what I'm in the market for. Still disappointed that it doesn't do on the fly route planning/replanning but small, GPS-enabled bike computer with cadence and speed sensor (for an extra £60!) sounds good enough.
I wonder if it has a built-in compass?

  • Anyone successfully used their Android smartphone for waterproof, reliable navigation?

I am sick and tired of Garmin's failures and might try a phone solution, at least as a backup.

  • What about a Garmin alternative?

  • I'm considering an Edge 1000 (although it gets shit-canned by DCRainmaker) and etrex 30 but it's tiring having to learn all their quirks again, it's tiring losing my data, it's tiring getting lost because they fail and then it's tiring having to argue with retailers to give me my money back for Garmin's shit products.

  • Bryton Rider 50 look good, gonna find more feedback from it.

  • I loved my eTrex 20 as it never failed me once and put it through a lots ( from cycling and trekking).

Mildly interested in the new Touch version, but yes the eTrex UI is alien compare to Edge.

  • If you are about to purchase Etrex 30 (or 20) be aware that the newer version is 30x or 20x.

  • Yep, it was the 30x I'd added to my wishlist.

Are they similar to the Edge in that you can wack a track on them and then it will give turn by turn navigation? Or can I add a GPS track to them and at least have a line to follow on roads? They'll not log any ANT+ data will they? Seems the etrex are much more reliable units but lack a lot of what makes the Edge better. If they could just make reliable Edge devices...

  • How does the navigation work on it? Is it a nice clear line of where to ride? I have a Vista HCx and find it small, overly detailed and basically a pain in the butt to use for cycling with. The mount is shit too.

  • You can wack a track on and ride, however you'll need to fiddle a bit to record your route compare to the Edge's press and play.

  • The disadvantage is that it's not a cycling GPS, you're spoiled by the ease of the Edge series being small, light and straightforward.

While it's a lots more reliable, the price you pay is that it's more complicated.

  • Even though I sort of hated the RFLKT I'm thinking about Wahoos new ELEMNT. Not out yet but specs and UI look good and I'm not overly impressed by the Garmin 810 that I got instead of the RFLKT.

  • As far as I can see, yes it will give turn by turn instructions and is compatible with cadence sensors.
I think TD list products previous riders have used (Gabes would know) do they do a similar thing with your event?

  • A friend's Dad is a serial audaxer and uses a smartphone (Android I think) with a dynamo hub to constantly charge it so it never goes flat. Don't know what he uses to navigate but could try to find out.

Ridewithgps (my preferred route plotting site) have an app which sounds like it would be suitable but I haven't used it.

  • With the etrex 20/30 with a track you can either follow a line and small arrow on the map page or just go in the direction the compass arrow points.
