  • For 2015 I have decided to slim down my stable and get a bit more use out of my Argos cycles 853 frame by using it for hill climbs as well as time trialling. It is a tad heavier than the Condor frame I used last year, But I am confident I can build it to under 6kg without much trouble.

As it stands, the bike looks like this, and has a season of time trialling ahead of it:

But I intend to change pretty much everything apart from the bars, headset and pedals. I'm looking forward to racing on a steel frame made in my home town, it fits quite nicely with the hopeless romanticism of fixed gear hill climbing.

    Spreadsheet

  • sub'd

  • Looking forward to it. Have always loved this build

  • Love an argos frame. Looking forward to seeing how you build it up!

  • What's happening to the condor?

  • Is hillclimbing on steel frames a Bristol thing? WW is the trend for 2015.

  • Well PJ does it, but I can't think of anybody else? WW is definitely in, hipsters across the land will be building light weight hill climb machines and making themselves sick all over the place. I can't wait.

  • The flat white economy

  • Nice! Aero gainz might be worth a second or two on Burrington but more importantly it's gonna look sick.

Is it getting most of the parts from the Condor?

  • I'm not sure how low I'm going to go with it, the fork will be swapped out for a 340g columbus minimal,so I may rock a few spacers and raise the front a bit.

    Spreadsheet

Can anybody point me in the direction of a long light seatpost? my USE is 290mm and I don't think that's going to cut it. 350mm ought to do.

  • Hylix as above if you're happy with inline, or something from Carboncycles.cc. Think you need to make your spreadsheet publicly accessible.

  • i have a 350 USE.

  • You'll easily get a chainring less than 100g. You have tyres down as 290g, is that for the pair? Cos that would mean Pista CLs...

  • That's one pista and one crono, so on second checking should actually be 300g. there are a few conservative guesses on there for things i dont have yet.

  • Ah fair enough. I still have my 50g 'grease, oil, glue and air' buffer included in my total. Vittoria's weights are a little off, 22mm Pista CL and Crono CS are 340g on my (non-Italian) scales.

  • I need to invest in some better scales, pretty much going on published weights here

  • I hate to be that guy, but if you ever get bored of the frame...
Look forward to seeing the progress.

  • Where did you get your forks? I have a similar bike that I am modernising for some TT'ing this season. I assume your steerer is 1".

I have some new wheels and cockpit sorted but want to try to avoid using a quill adapter.

  • double post

  • They are Argos forks original to the frame, I believe they still make them so its probably worth contacting them.

First update, got the wheels sorted. They are 36h which is slightly irritating as far as weight is concerned, but the wheelset is still only 1393g, didn't cost me too much, and I shouldn't have any problems whatsoever with stiffness or durability.

I have tyres and a Columbus Minimal fork in the post.

  • Thanks Borek, are they steel? They look carbon from a distance.

  • They are steel, very very narrow, and I imagine quite aero.

  • These?

If so you'll be hard pushed to find better.
