  • is it better to shove some glue in the gap?

  • How much glue will I need for 2 28" tubs? Will a cheapo 30g tube of Mastik be enough or should I get the big pot? I don't envisage much more tub useage in my future.

  • If I were doing tubs I would use Tufo tape. Only heard good things and seen people install it in ~30 seconds. Seems a lot less messy although theres probably pros and cons of both

  • Why so bad? Genuinely interested

  • Tape will do in some cases. #yunotspecific

  • Love glueing tubs, but after spending 2 hours removing old glue from my front rim yesterday I'm not so sure! New tub is currently being stretched, have a few days to decide what to do.

  • i mainly run tape (double tubular, giros or sprinters) but people say its not as good as glue etc. it certainly makes it easier to get a tub off when you want to change it, but ive never had any problems with tubs rollings or coming overly dislodged. i even rode (unbeknownst to me at the time) without it stuck down with tape OR glue once for around 6 miles on a zipp 1080. nothing happened. (bought it off ebay and it came with a tub on it, and pumped up and i got overly excited)

    *inb4 shit fixie skidders say

  • If I was racing track, cyclocross or regularly descending high mountains in summer heat I'd glue, otherwise tape is fine.

  • Hillclimb and occasional TT wheels. What's lighter?

  • /Tufo on rear and any other brand on front. Ive never had problems even when having to emergency skid etc.

  • I had to remove an old tape strip from a rim and it was the worst job ever. Glue is much easier

  • Make sure it's Tufo Extreme.

I've used tubs attached with that for general riding and never had any problems. As AndyP says, use glue of you're doing track, cross or descending for a long time at high temps.

  • @umop3pisdn Properly glued tubs have lower crr than taped. Important for hc due to the lower speeds/higher crr component

  • Just took the plunge - ordered some reflex rims and schwalbe ultremo tubs. Keeping a close eye on this glue vs tape business.

I'm thinking tape to minimise the fuss on my first try.

  • you'll thank yourself for using tape first time if you've never put a tub on.

  • Whats the thoughts on carrying a pre-glued tub. I had one in a zippy bag for a while. Folded very carefully. When I needed to replaced a tub at home I figured I'd just use that one. Except I could not unfold the fecker. Took Tools and a long time. Should I have waited for the glue to dry out completly before folding it?

  • Let the glue dry for at least 48 hours before folding. Fold it so no two glued areas are in contact with each other.

  • This is the exact opposite of what I actually did.

This was my lifeline on my 550km sportive. Ignorance is bliss I Guess.

How do you pack it if the glue is facing out?

  • won't the glue stick to everything else then?

  • There's a few guides out there on how best to fold a pre-glued tub, but basically you fold it lengthways with the base tape side by side, thus avoiding contact.

  • It's a contact adhesive, so as long as you've not got it pressed hard against something, no.

  • I'll youtube it tonight.

I have a decent front tub, and a half worn rear I've done a few hard skids on (descending Pico de Las Nieves like a pro), which also has a can of sealant in it.

I'll probably do a few more weeks on those. Then whip them off, and pack the front Down as a spare for long rides.

Basically I'm itching to get my FMBs on as spring seems to be kicking in (well its meant to be snowing at the end of the week. But everythings relative).

  • This is the exact opposite of what I actually did.

    Kinda loling at this. Sorry.

  • Glue, any better than another? Mosquito have Continental and Tubasti in stock which I could pick up after work, or I could order Mastik online.
