Damage control question: Back in the days I newbied and selected 1X 24h for the front. For aestetichs looking down radially at the hub like the picture it's a bolognese spaghetti party - so I'm thinking of relacing the wheel with all heads out. Is that a terrible idea structure wise (the cross is rather close to the flange).

Yes. If you're going to relace it, why not just get some new spokes and redo it radially? It's a Novatec hub so it can be laced radially without any problems and plain gauge spokes like those will be cheap to replace.

Yes = terrible idea? :]
I can't stand the look of a radial laced wheel.

Is that a terrible idea
Yes. What do you mean by spag.bol.? The outbound spokes need a thumb on the bend to set them to the required ~105deg bend, and everything will straighten up once it's tight

Thanks - I don't understand this part:

Yes. :) Yes = terrible idea.
In that case, relace it 2 cross with some new spokes. Either way, all heads out is a bad idea for any lacing pattern with crosses.

or go 2x

as above.

Thanks - I don't understand this part:
Stick your thumb on the outbound spokes next to the bend and push towards the flange. This plastically deforms the bend to the tighter angle it needs on outbound spokes; it's part of the stress relieving process, but if you do it by thumb before tensioning it reduces the amount of adjustment you need to make after stress relieving the tensioned wheel.

Noted - thanks!

Or you can just hit them with a nylon mallet like what I do, in order to save wear and tear on my delicate little thumbs.

Not as precise though. Just don't try to use both methods at the same time.

Is there any good spoke calculators out there, that I can trust?
I have a Planet X 82mm rim and CycleOps PowerTap SL+ Track Hub with 24 holes would need to be laced 3 cross.
What spokes do I need?

and of course who could forget arups website

One too many crosses

Mate, do you even England in the late 20th century?

I have a 1x wheel where the spokes wouldn't touch unless they were all head-out. The wheel has ridden absolutely fine, street and track, for about six years.
But no inner tube, so really not all that bad when it comes to rolling resistance.
