  • It's all about the turbos for spring 2015. If you've broken bits off yourself, that is.

  • @Skülly, how did you dislocate the elbow? hope it wasn't riding that sweet red orrell, which looks hella fun to ride, and definitely needs to show it's wheels at the vintage jersey ride in march/april.

  • What if you want to do any weights training / sports other than cycling? I found the whole left side of my body felt slumped down and the shoulder was loose. Really wasn't comfortable at all. Not something I'd be happy to live with.

  • I had full separation in 2010 or 2011 and never had an op as they preferred to leave it, is all fine now just looks a bit odd under a suit as my shoulder drooped considerably! Recovery is pretty quick tho compared to acl haha

  • The NHS might prefer to leave it as it costs them about £15,000 to perform the operation, but if you fight for it they will give it to you, free. I think it's worth it in the long term. It's only a night in the hospital, week or so on painkillers, month in a sling, and then about 3-6 months of regular physio which only takes a few minutes per day. Could get back on a bike safely after a few months. Screws the whole balance of your body not getting something like that fixed.

  • Well, it's been almost four weeks and I'm still in a lot of pain and discomfort.

    Is this normal? They seemed to think that the pain would subside after a week or so but that's really not the case.

    The (still very) limited movement is also causing me upper back problems on the same side as I can't stretch it properly and I'm still not sleeping particularly well because of the pain when I move.

    I tried to get onto the turbo do do some pedalling and it was too painful to reach the bars.

    So, what's the score? Anyone have the same experience? Thanks in advance!

    Sorry to hear your suffering. I'm afraid I had about 8 weeks of severe pain. Only really reduced when the physio started. Sleeping was the worst, slept with a hard pillow hooked under my armpit for support.

    Have they given you a time frame for getting started with the physio?

  • No, not yet - I go back to the fracture clinic tomorrow so I guess I'll find out then.

    I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't an abnormally long time to be in such discomfort. It's somewhat of a relief to know that it's normal (ish.)

  • I joined the club too. Mine broke just under 4 weeks ago, a bit of discomfort if picking up things or stretching my arm around. But other wise is generally ok. Been back on my bike and noticed fitness took a dive, but hey ho.

  • Update:

    One more month off work and in a sling but I have been referred for physio. I have no idea when that will actually start but if I'm still not happy after the next four weeks, the consultant is happy to push forward and just operate. (Which is my preferred option really.)

  • The fitness drop and weight gain are thoroughly depressing.

    I've replaced cycling with takeaways and beer....

    Anywhere online have a good list of foods to be consuming? Protein, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, boron, silicone, etc I'm aware of but I'd like a list of meals or foods to make my lunch shopping for best recovery stuff easier.

    I wonder if 3 months on Warfarin (which fucks with vitamin k somehow) made me more susceptible to a break?

  • it's cos you're getting old, osteoporosis is just around the corner!

  • Ask your orthopaedic consultant.

    They'll probably tell you to eat a balanced diet, unless you have any specific dietary needs, for example due to diabetes or being fat.

    What did the docs say about taking warfarin? Reducing clots is not going to be helpful for fracture union.

    Then again, having a plate put in has risks of - you guessed it - clotting...

  • @hippy don't you hace legal cover under one of your race licenses? Maybe consider going private in the hope you can reclaim fron the council.
    IIRCy plate fixation cost about 2k, including way too many followup appointments.

  • Not on warfarin now. Ended in Feb.

  • Not sure. I don't have a BC lic. but I am an AUK member, and in CSG and Willesden CC. Are there any non-dodgy nowin nofee operators?
