  • Advice sought on fitting, sorry for the n00b question…

I don’t normally wear a helmet but decided to buy one so I don’t have to use loaners for track sessions/be precluded from some club rides. I tried a few different brands and ended up buying a Giro (Savant, superfit large) as it was the most comfortable. I then read that when properly adjusted you shouldn’t be able to move the front up on the forehead more than an inch or so. However, in order to achieve this level of snugness it’s necessary to make the band and particularly the straps uncomfortably tight.

Is it likely that the helmet just isn’t the right fit, or does it take some extremely careful fettling of the fore/aft straps to achieve the correct level of snugness?

  • This is why it's important to try helmets on and adjust them to see how they fit before you buy one.

Helmet should be about a finger width above your eyebrows, then tightened up at the back. Buckles should be just below your earlobes and the strap done up so only two fingers can fit between the strap and your chin.
