With a bit of forward planning, trains and a travelodge the night before really needn't cost ever so much. Certainly cheaper than buying a car anyway!
On most events, you'll easily be able to find a room mate and split the cost of a twin room.
Otherwise, riding out early in the morning is another way, and has the bonus of more time on the bike.
If a ride is logistically/financially impossible without a car, then there are other events or you can ride a DIY from your front door.
