  • 60psi out of the track pump this morning and popped right on. Guess trail side repairs will just be a bit laborious.

  • My MTB came with those rims and tyres as standard. No problems getting the tyres on, seated or inflated, but the rim tape is all over the shop. Really I think it should be wider and if when I get round to it, I'll be replacing mine with wider stuff. Or just replacing the wheels.

  • not a 29'er (650b) but treated myself - Merida ONE-SIXTY 7. 700, 160mm travel 10-42 on the back it's a beast!!

rides like a dream and can really cuase some fun on the trails/single tracks, heading out to Wales soon to get some proper routes in

  • Anyone got a recent superfly? Am trying to choose between the superfly 5 and x-caliber 9 (ride2work), frame seems definitely nicer on the superfly but no rack mounts, going to need a rack+panniers when I goto the TT on the IOM.

Looking at fitting the Tubus Adapter Set QR, the Superfly 5 does have a QR but with closed convert dropouts (135-5 spacing) which is confusing me (ive been away from mtbing since bar ends and gripshift)

  • You wont be able to fit that to a through axle system.

  • The strange thing is the frame is closed dropouts but isnt thu axle, Trek website;

*Q: Is the 12x142 axle included with bike?

    Staff Reviewer
A: This bike comes equipped with a rear quick release and does not include a thru axle.*

  • Coz those things are never wrong. You seen the state of half the answers on the Evans site?!

  • Haha yeah, I actually asked about it on there but not holding my breath

Guess will just have to order one into store

  • It's a thru axle, but it might not be, maybe.

  • mystery solved, turns out its both, and QR comes on the model I'm after which is nice

The rear wheel has been upgraded to a 142x12mm axle, which ties the back end together tightly. The drop-outs are convertible between the 142x12mm and standard 135x5mm quick release via removable inserts, so your old set of race or training wheels will still fit. That said, when set up for 135x5mm, the dropouts remain ‘closed’ so you need to completely remove the skewer before the wheel will come out—it’s a little inconvenient and no longer a ‘quick’ release.

  • Yeah, you still wont be able to fit that rack adapter, as the 'closed' dropout will get in the way.

  • because its recessed or because the bracket will foul the frame?

  • Right, Kris Holm 29ers are back in stock at that unicycle place. Before I order one, is there owt better out there at that kinda price?

Also, is a 2.1" tyre too narrow for running on that rim?

  • Don't remember price, but the downside to KH is weight. I can run 2.1 twin rails on 45mm rims fine. Wouldn't like to go beyond that though.

  • I've got 700×35 Marathons on my KH XC (38mm outside width) rims, they're fine in terms of ride and handling, but they are more or less slick tyres with plenty of tread wrap. If you're thinking knobbly tyres, you have to consider how fitting tyres designed for relatively narrow rims is going to affect the shape of the tread, basically you run the risk of riding off the side of the tread at large lean angles.

  • Cheers guys.

Running the 2.1 tyre on the KH would just be a temporary measure.

@drøn, the KH freeride is just under £60. I know the Surly Rabbit Hole would be lighter but at over twice the price of the KH, so would my wallet. There's crabon ebay rims but they only seem to go up to 35mm and once you factor in shipping, they aren't much cheaper than a Rabbit Hole.

  • Tried ghetto tubeless on the WTB Lasershite today and it was a total fail.

With no tube in there the tyre totally refused to seat on the rim.

Even tried the airline at the local garage and no dice. Reckon the airflow from the airline at work might be a bit quicker so might have been able to pop it on there but it should not take one particular airline to pop a tyre on.

Can't really afford a KH Freeride just now but this WTB rim is really grinding my gears!

  • You might need to build up the rim diameter a bit with some tape. On my CX wheels, I had to add a few wraps of gorilla tape, this meant the bead of the tyre has less gap when it's not seated, and less air can escape, and means it's much easier to pop it on with a track pump or crap compressor.

  • I had 2 wraps on there, maybe I'll try again with another wrap or two. I might even do some wraps of narrower tape in the well of the rim to try and build that area up so the tyre can slip into place easier.

    Cheers.

  • Sod it, sold stuff on eBay so ordered a KH Freeride, spokes and a 36h XT hub just now.

  • Nice! I'm looking forward to this!
Since my 29er has a rigid front end I'm thinking about doing the same thing as you for the front end.

  • Bet you're no looking forward to it as much as I am!

  • Well, I'm looking forward to using you as a guinea pig.
Basing decisions on empirical knowledge made by someone else is always easier... ;)

  • Reverse-spam: anyone got a set of 29er wheels, rim brake (or what's cheap and decent new?). Plus tyres. And perhaps some shifters fora 3x7 setup.

  • I've got some STX 7spd shifters, if you're interested?
