i should have looked but I was so angry that I don't seem to have been thinking very quickly, would have taken a photo on my phone but, it was at the bottom of a bungied up rack bag, i was wearing thick gloves etc etc so hopefully, time + route + license plate should be enough.
you are prob right about the database/lack of follow up but for what it's worth I did ask for a response in my email and i have a ref no. i can chase up.
edit: all seems pretty minor now @Itisaboutthebike has put his story up!

@Brameses you should easily have enough info to identify the driver, bus companies aren't especially fond of being helpful tho and so have it stiched right up. Is sadly why I have taken to a camera on the bars. I'm unsure how useful it is but buses seem to have the reg and then another number on them, like this one(VVV) has 753 on it. Some sort of designation given by the bus company.
It isn't always followed up, lots will just go into a database.
