I had to bring in my MBPr in for repair and I just has a look at the job sheet that they sent me, it states
Board, Logic, 2.6 GHz, 8 GB
I know the logic board is playing up, but will they have to replace the ram at once? I presume the 8Gb refer to the ram and if this is the case, I need to call them because my mac has 16gb ram in it.

What does it say in the "About this Mac" bit on your computer? Might be that one of the sticks had burnt out and they replaced it.
-
• #7230
It says 16gb, but I haven't handed the machine over yet, because their turnaround time is about a week and my other older Mac also needed repair so they are doing that first, I only got the job sheet for this so I can just drop it in the store next week without another appt.

@guyfriday I'd echo repairing permissions and doing a backup. Also check your startup items. Seems unlikely but it might just be grinding to a halt because you have half your applications running on boot. @TRA is right that more RAM is never a bad plan and to check your existing memory, but I'd only suggest a clean install as a last resort. If you do need to do one you can restore your applications and user files from the backup which saves a lot of bother.
I'd never heard of ONYX either actually so will look into that.

New mac time for me. Been bouncing back and forth between iMac and MBP and I think I've landed on a new 21.5" iMac.
Before I place the order though just wanted to have one last trawl around for a recent s/h model I could upgrade to 16GB and SSD storage. Where's good for quality reconditioned s/h macs?

Can someone help me get my brain straight please.
Currently have: Mid 2010 Core2Duo MBP. 256GB HD and want to switch out for SSD.
Since new (Snow leopard I think?) It has had OSs installed over the top of each other, so I imagine a clean install of Yosemite would be beneficial. Is it as simple as using a SATA -> USB cable to install Yosemite on a new SSD drive, swapping them over, and then using the cable to attach the old drive and dragging files etc that I want to keep back? What about apps/games? If I create a backup on an external HDD then restore from that will I get the benefit of the clean install or will it literally just duplicate my current drive? Also, I've read something about trim controllers (or something) and SSDs on Yosemite. Is this a pitfall I need to be aware of?Essentially what I'm looking for is sage advice on the most effective/efficient way to make the swap. I currently don't have an external drive, so hoping to avoid springing for one of those as well as a new SSD.

21.5" is quite small, why not second hand 27 with upped ram + ssd like you say?

This repairing permissions thing....should it endlessly find permissions it needs to fix. After reading the above I gave it a go on my 2008 macbook and there was plenty for it to repair. I restarted it, then checked permissions, and there was another lengthy list that it said it needed to work through. This seems to repeat over and over again...
The computer works fine for what it's worth so I'm not sure it's aything to be concerned about... Any thoughts though? -

I did this to an old white macbook, all happy now:
- put SSD in USB caddy and install OS onto it from laptop.
- Boot into newly installed OS to check all is well, then access internal HDD to drag over files I want to keep.
- Swap drives inside laptop
- Install apps from fresh
- Keep old HDD for a while as a failsafe.
I have a Time Machine backup but I never restore from it as I always assume it'll put all the crap back on too. I often keep a copy of the ~/Library folder, just in case there are some pref files that I want to keep later on.
- put SSD in USB caddy and install OS onto it from laptop.

Am seriously considering throwing the mac out of the window and buying a pc. Just got a lovely new iphone 6 and tried to get it going on my old - 2006 - mac mini. After having to buy Snow Leopard, and install that, and find iTunes 11, and install that. I'm trying to back up my old iphone 4, before transferring everything to the new iPhone 6, and I'm getting an error message that there isn't enough space. FFS. There is plenty enough space on the hard drive. I've done everything on here
http://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT203271
except update the phone ios.
anyone got a solution that works? Sorry for ranty post but am very pissed off with Apple at the moment. Going for bath and vodka to calm down.

If you use icloud on your iPhone 4 you should be able to sort your new phone out without using the mac or any computer for that matter.
Sync email, contact calendars etc. to iCloud on iPhone 4. Backup to icloud as well if you like.
As far as I understand you don't need to restore your 6 from the 4 backup. Sign in to icloud on iPhone 6. Everything's there already. For apps, you just gotta sign in to the same App Store account on your 6 as your 4.
I hope this is what you are trying to do, otherwise I missed something in your rant!
P.s. Error message...when does it appear? Not enough space where? -
• #7241
Jon, cheers, using iCloud is going to have to be my next step. I guess I don't like storing my stuff where I don't know where it is.
The error message says there is not enough space on my hard drive to back up the iPhone. But obviously I've checked and there's a massive ammount of space.

Fuck, I remember having the same issue like a year ago, but can't remember how I fixed it / what my workaround was.
-
• #7243
If that's the first time since 2008 then yep, you've prob got approx one billion permissions to repair. Maybe even too many for one sweep, maybe, that's just a guess though (I think I have experienced something slightly similar though). Do it 3-5 times, if it's not all clear by then maybe ignore or update.

I'd avoid the small iMacs. You can't replace the ram and they have normal hdds. I think they are a bit crap to be honest. Grab a small MBP and a second hand display and you have best of both worlds. Pcie flash drives as per the Mbps are amazing and I doubt you'll feel any difference in power (can't remember specs ATM) between processors but the Mbps SSD will make it fly. Grab one at an airport for 1k?

That's a graphical error. Nothing to do with restoring your hard drive etc will fix it.
You'll either need a new graphics card or logic board depending on what model you have (dedicated graphics card etc).
I seem to remember that some MBPs had a serious problem with this and Apple issued a free recall / fix. Got to Apple.com/support and find out if your model has an open recall.

My MBP of that generation had an NVidia graphics chip with a known problem that was replaced for free, but that was when it was about 4 years old. Can't quite remember what it looked like when it happened, but could be related.

Right, cheers for that guys....do you think it's worth taking in to be repaired or should I just cut my losses?

There is no recall as such for MBPs in the UK with that problem as far as I know, but my 2011 model is being exchanged with a new logic board because Apple knows there is a known problem. You should have no problem getting it fixed free of charge, particularly if you got it from the Apple store or with Apple directly. If they are being difficult about it, tell them you want to make a claim under the UK consumer rights law, which gives you 6 years protection. If you didn't get it from the Apple store or Apple just wouldn't fix it for free for good reasons, it would cost you nearer £400 to get ir fixed with Apple directly, as they gave me a quote despites it being free of charge, so I know the cost.
Would anybody have spare lightning cable for sale? Would take usb adapter aswell. Lost mine...
Please PM. Can collect around London or pay additional postage.
Thank you!
