In answer to your last question, an average commuter in London cycling the most common 260 working days a year for half an hour between 8:15 and 8:45 and 5:15 to 5:45 (most common journey times) got wet from rain ten times in 2013 (as reported somewhere on here via a tlf poster).
As for focusing on rain, @Velocio, don't most small cameras just have a massive field of focus that starts about six foot from the lense (my muvi ripoff did), so unlike the phone example they aren't trying to focus on the nearest lot thing?
Interesting hypothesis - it would be interesting to see how the self-lit forward facing camera works in practice.
The rear-facing camera seems to work fine in all conditions.
How many rain days does the daily commuter experience, I wonder.
