Is 59 gear inches reasonable for a SSCX just for general trail riding rather than racing? Thinking of converting something probably completely inappropriate...

Sounds about right to me. It depends on how muddy/dry conditions are, but it's a good starting point.

Cheers - will probably be sticking to all-weather trails initially, so hopefully can get away with just swapping the tyres...

Are you converting something you are used to ride on the road? If so, you'd probably better gear down a tad as you're accustomed to that gearing/riding. Especially given larger tyres increase GI a bit.

Will take some pics this weekend. Quick spec. Genesis Day One 54cm, reynolds 520, recently powder coated a mid grey colour. Deda bars, stem, seatpost. Hope headset. Mavic open pro / genesis hubs ( new bearings). Genesis crank, white industries freewheel. Tektro levers, Avid cantis. Road tyres fitted.
