  • Happen to me, last resort is to put the cog on the vice, tighten it up a lots, and then with sheer force of three person, we managed to get it off.

All because I never backpedal due to having a rear brake, which made a significant difference.

  • Tried rotafixing? Worked for me in the past.

  • i'm not a mathphysicist, but you can jener8 99,000 x the tork rotafixing.

  • Taking Jnr to nursery tomorrow.

Nearly put my shoulder out getting it out of the garage.

Ignore the awkward Brooks set up, the layback on the post means it hits him in the knees so I'm still trying to dial both of us in. Put him to far back and you end up popping wheelies, too far forward and he's not gonna have a good time.

Does anyone have any cheap thumbies? I don't want to spend the £20 it would take to get some off eBay for an XT set. Not after anything special, total parts bin fodder - I thought I had one.

  • Was the hub OK after that?

I'm sure more power can be found and applied...but Le Manfriend is worried he may wreck things by sheer force.

  • Yeah it is, it's the cog that's fucked.

It can be removed, rotafix is not recommended.

Any plastic friction shift one from an old BSO will work just as well, if you don't not having indexed shifting.

  • I don't even have that! Stuck the one I did have on my wife's bike. That's the issue with eBay - the only ones being sold are decent ones. Will try one of the many bike recycling places in York and raid their parts bin.

  • Where you at? I'll have a butcher in my part bin, got load of old shifter and brake levers from BSO destined for scrap.

  • @dglshrn well will you look at that, found an old thumbie in good condition, it's a front shifter, but got enough length for an 8 speed cassette last I tried it.

pm me your post address and I'll send it out, it's one of those.

  • Perfect man, thank you. Will PM in a sec.

  • Dolly - bodge development platform

...on the subject of thumbies, I just mounted 4 types of bodged shifters for a pre-barwrap shakedown. Despite the full length brake housing and 8 speed chain with 9spd cassette and shifters, I am convinced with the hack I did on the rapidfire.

Was going to try friction, different mechs and various mounting positions. but it was very good. The worlds lightest front shifter (tm) currently features 3 positions, and is set up for 28/38... It actually arose because I didn't have any bottom pull front mechs.. but i like it so it will be staying in some form, especially if I can get that bloody long bottom bracket off. :)

  • Mounted a deore lx rapidfire to a chunky Tektro 340 brake lever using an m4 joining nut as the pivot, and simple serrated washer and part of an old alloy reflector bracket - whew!

Still a lot of bits to sort out. Got to get that bottom bracket out sometime , more urgently should true the rear crossmax, get a 9spd chain, possibly nicer rear mech (was there a dark blue one to match the old deore?) Wrap bars, purchase correct 26.6mm seatpost, find a non-bent adjuster and plastic cap thingy for the shifter, and fit fatter tyres... and decide what tyres to put on the 2nd wheelset.
    Thats all.

  • Here is the front shift bodge. It might not be fun when the saddle is up a couple more inches, but I have long arms, and don't really plan to shift much..

Thanks to @6pt for the bits to finish, and mechanic at look mum for the cheapo cranks.

  • Found this bike in the canal and fished it out leaving it to dry for a day before starting my next project. Single speed ladies bike for a friend.

  • Dremel tool + cutting disc is my choice of tool also.
Have a needle handy to widen the hole in the inner liner while it's hot.
    Super clean ends.

  • Yup :/

  • Place cable in vice, clamp lightly (don't deform the cable), have needle nearby, wear safety goggles
Apply dremel, holding the loose end of the cable in the other hand, keeping the cable stable.
    Cut all the way through.
Lightly apply pressure to the end with the flat side of the cutting disc to polish and heat up the end. Lightly! Too much pressure will send cutting disc shards flying everywhere, especially in your face.
Turn off dremel, place aside, quickly grab needle and stab the cable end.
    Wiggle.
    Done.
Works well with a little practice.

  • Hozan cable cutter. Job sorted. Even with my feeble fore arms is the proverbial knife through butter.

You gotta shout HOZAN!!! while using for them to work best obv... :P
