Yeah it sounds pretty bizarre. No doubt as wind proof as a bin liner ;)
May make more sense to just take the fingers only to stop the STI metal leeching heat.
BTW you don't need surgical silicon gloves, just mechanics/petrol-station gloves as a wind/waterproof layer.
It's a handy bodge.
What about wearing them on top?
