  • Well it's on the table. Need a quick sale as tax bill has cleaned me out.

  • Has it got Mavericks installed on it already? If so I might be tempted...

(I need a cheap machine to have a bash at doing app dev.)

[EDIT] Bah. 4th in line it seems.

  • Yup. 10.9.2

And Cash is king. I can have it ready for pickup for the weekend.

  • Anyone? Bueller? Or are we all poor from the tax bill?

Also, anyone installed 10.10.2 yet? I heard rumour that it's caused wifi problems in computers that didn't have a problem before... fucking hell.

  • Tax bill £300 more than I was expecting, but have just done two weekends on call so I may just bite the bullet anyway, will let you know later on this week.

  • Cool.

  • What Mac should I get?

  • I'm sure you've throught about it long and hard! What Mac do you need?

  • Used late 2011 MBP, stick an SSD in it... Boom...

  • Or get an Air...

  • The 13" MacBook Pro is perfect for Tumblr.

  • Transl8, plz...

  • At least SP might occasionally use his machine for work...

  • I have a 2009 MacBook but it's a bit... fucked. Cracked screen, knackered keyboard, old software, low compatibility, full up. So I was thinking to replace it with a new MacBook Pro, probably 15", definitely Retina display.

The base model has a 2.2GHz processor and 256gb flash storage. I'd probably up the former to 2.5 for £80 and I thought about doubling the flash storage, even though it's £240 extra.

Which begs the question, do I go for the top drawer one at £2000, as it has both of these upgrades as standard PLUS a dedicated graphics thing? It's overkill at the moment, but I'd like to think I'll get 7-10 years out of it.

I use AutoCAD, Vectorworks, Sketchup, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign all the time, plus I'm getting into Revit and I'd like to get into sophisticated rendering as I start to do more private work, designing buildings for people and stuff. Plus I need all the usual bullshit to allow me to function in 2015, such as a web browser, electronic mail and a calendar. shit's getting real and I need to get busy. It'll still have a special folder for pictures of bikes and shoes though.

I could make do with the base model but is it a false economy? In for a penny etc...

    Thanks x

  • To be honest, it sound like a desktop computer would be more beneficial and the last a lots longer (32GB max ram), unless you really do need a laptop.

  • Desktops are great, but laptops are more versatile... Buy an external monitor, keyboard, mouse and a couple of backup drives and you're done... Instant desktop when you need it...

  • Or get an iMac and an Air...

  • Buy the fastest and most powerful you can possibly afford. Max processor/RAM/HD

The 15" Retina MBP are good value IMO - I have no trouble doing hefty photoshop work on mine and large high res preview indesign docs etc. etc. External monitor for home is a must.
Even after a year I'm consistently surprised at the slick speedy feel.

  • I thought about it but I really need to be mobile, party for making presentations etc. The desktops are better value and beautiful but routed to a desk enough at work.

  • I thought about doing it this way but I don't want to compromise too much on screen space when I'm out and about or showing work to a client. I think I'll eventually get a display but can't be limited in the meantime.

  • Reassuring, thanks guys.

  • My MacBook Pro is also the same age as your, but it was a mid range model with a dedicated graphic card, it still work pretty well running Photoshop and Lightroom but can be further improved by installing an SSD to get a few more year out of it, annoyingly the RAM maxed at 8GB.

I'd go for the high end model if you can afford it, you can able to get 7 years out of it easily.

  • My MBP is flying, last of the non-glued models... I do all my shit on it hooked up to a 27" Thunderbolt, serious workhorse... It was starting to lag 'til I put the SSD in there, now she floats through my workload...

  • Yep. They're back.

@StandardPractice buy practically any other brand of laptop.
I cannot stand this laptop any more. Nothing works like it should.

  • +1. Mine is a 13" early 2011 and with 16gb ram and a ssd it's almost on par with the new MBP's
