Also the credit card readers are very hit and miss at best. I've had more fails when trying to take out a 24hr hire. I get to the very end of the process when it says "sorry can't proceed with the process" (or words to that effect). On one occasion I called the number associated and they promised to call me back the following day...That was a month ago.

Cyclists do not need to go above 20mph in built up, heavily pedestrianised areas. And most of them don't. Most of them also overestimate the speed they are capable of.
haha.
It had to be you

London hire bikes.

I dredged this thread to dredge this topic. I've just called them "TFL bikes" which is a bit wank. They need a better name.

Cycle hire bikes is fine surely? (Add/ommit London/Barclays prefix depending on context.)
-
• #82
No. It's not awesome enough. Needs more awesomeness.
-
• #83
Agreed. Sorry. Please continue.

horatio is wrong. 'Hire bikes' is what to call them.
-
• #85
You're wrong, Oliver. Let me use "your" language here: Hire bikes is to vague. There needs to be a specific noun to refer to them. Like... Spiffcycles.

I'll see your 'to vague' and raise you another 'o'. And *y*our** mum's a hire bike. :) -

Got a puncture whilst out on a Boris Bike yesterday. Is this a first?
It is for me.

So kids around here (Tower Hamlets) seem to have figured out how to "liberate" some bikes. It seems to involve pulling really hard, or jiggling them, or a combination of both? It doesn't always work I guess as they never have enough for all of them and they're constantly trying on bikes after they're dropped off.
All they seem to do is ride up and down the small pedestrianized piece of road here, learning to wheelie them.
I'm not sure how annoyed I am by this.

The older docking stations are a bit odd so you can sometimes just get the bikes out of them for nothing, it's common round this way too.
-
• #93
Hmmm... These ones were installed a few months ago. Perhaps it's all of the stations?
It makes sense, though. My partner got a £50 charge not long ago for over using a bike. She called up and said she returned it within 15 minutes and they refunded the money without a problem (didn't even charge the £2 user fee - shhh!). I'm guessing they know it's an issue.

Once I saw a barclays bike truck driver giving a bunch of boris bikes (3-4) to a group of kids in Camden while he was doing the usual swap between docking stations... just saying
-

Yeah they know, a few forumers work for the scheme and told me about the problems.
They're usually pretty good at refunds AFAIK.

One of the drivers tried to run a group of us down once.
Is it possible that he was just replacing their bikes that may have been faulty with working ones?
-
• #97
No no, the kids were just standing next to the van, the driver unloaded these bikes and gave them to them :)

i think they wedge some card or other material against the magnet in the docking station.
when the customer returns the bike it does not lock properly.
i got caught out once at salmon and rhodeswell.
they rode off on the bike i thought i had docked. laughing at me which was a bit bugging.
i phoned the customer services department. I think i got stung for a few quid on usage charge.
east london kids - don't you just love em ?

From 35m:
"Central London cyclists ride a few hundred yards to work. We're pandering to a metropolitan elite".
"The majority of cyclists are their own worst enemy with no road sense".
That way I get explain who Ken is and what he did.
