I found myself going into 'Dad' mode a few times last night - two long drags in a row in chilling conditions - I kept needing to check where he was - if he got home safe etc. Stressfull stuff this endurance cycling following! (You youngsters will understand some day, when you've had teenage kids of your own - not that Steve is a teeneager, of course, but it does train you how to worry properly. :-) ) . I'm sure there will be more occasions - like tonight ... just off to check ...

His progress towards home was inexorable last night. I was checking regularly from bed. I just can't imagine...

I'm just an awed fan :)
Where I am this morning it's cold and sleeting, even thinking about nipping to the car in a duvet jacket gives me the chills. Yet SA was on the road at 05:30 and has already put in appx 60 miles, extreme physical and mental fortitude.
Only another 343 days to go!

Thanks for taking the time to post these every day.
This.

It looks like Godwin averaged 154 miles in January, so Steve is currently 20% ahead. That's means he'll do 90,000 miles for the year.
Or that he's bought himself a 4 day buffer already. I'm really worried in case he gets ill. It would so awesome if he breaks the record in October and then can spend the rest of the year kicking his record further out of reach.

Or he can break the record comfortably knowing his achievement and have a fucking rest my god I'm tired even thinking about what he's up to now, much less what he's going to feel like in November

its completely insane. amazing but completely insane.
Kurt Searvogel seems to be putting in the miles too. He seems faster. He is also probably very much benefiting from better weather.

You can follow Steve a bit more easily here
http://audaxclubhackney.co.uk/tg.html
it is a stripped out version of his main spot tracker.
Absolutely awe inspiring riding though. Last night when he got to Worcester the guy putting him up for the night said he looked like he was about to start a 300, not having just finished one. -

The replay feature is amusing ... Set the speed to around 16384.

I have not read all the thread.
Kurt has realised that I am more capable than he thought and has changed his plan.
He is now a lot more dangerous than he was.
What he is doing is watching what I do and adding a bit on. He is copying me and is known for copying his rivals.
However. He currently has weather on his side. I loseabout 10 miles a day getting dressed for cold weather and am losing speed because of risk of ice.
I will launch an attack when things improve like when I rode to Yorkshire and he had no answer tothat.
I reckon by late Spring Kurt may run out of options and I hope to be catching him back up by then. Also it seems like Kurt had a bit of a fall riding a recumbent... wouldn't a recumbent be serious cheating?
-
• #219
Yes, 'bents are bullshit and should have a separate category.
-
• #220
On a more serious note, UMCA rules allow for the use of any unfaired HPV. I'm not entirely surprised that Kurt fell though, recumbents are not easy to transition to. I did think that trying to incorporate one into the attempt would be a poor idea.
-
• #221
I know they're allowed but I disagree with it. They have separate categories for them in everything else and they should've done it for this. Go Steve!

UCI style record bike rules >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
-
• #223
It's hardly UCI type tinkering to put recumbents in a separate category. If any of them want to ride a beam bike or in the superman position then that's great, but a recumbent puts the body in a completely different position and has a huge effect on potential speeds.
-
• #224
You don't need UCI rules, you just need to make 'bents their own category.

Says everything that the two Americans need silly middle nick names. The plucky understated Brit is so much more likeable.
I'm actually annoyed there is competition though. A record stands for all these years, then three try it all at once. It should be man against record and that be it.
Still amazed by it all though. Hope I get out to ride with Steve at some point. If he keeps bumbling between Warwickshire and Gloucestershire then there is a chance.
hah, yes he may as well wear a hair shirt as well!
