Is Mr Schwalbe riding on a 42 degree banked track?
-
• #78
Doesn't matter. The laws of physics are the same whether you're on a banked track or not. Just because you're on a banked track doesn't mean that fundamental physical principles no longer apply, and those fundamental physical principles say the size of a tyre's contact patch is not determined by tyre width.

^^^ The truth!
I'm after some decent indoor/wood tubs, anyone recommend anything toward the tackier side? As I am a novice and our banking is steep/dusty/repair filled.
Ed would be perfect but just realised they are clincher :/ -

Ask other experienced riders.
Actually, I'm interested now instead of sitting in my room feeling bored. I understand the need for guidelines and I don't mean to undermine these, but to understand...
If a 23mm tyre has lower rolling resistance than a 20mm, wouldnt a 23mm be more prone to slipping in a velodrome? -
• #81
No, because rolling resistance is not the same as lateral grip. A tyre with a stiff carcass but a soft tread compound will produce lots of grip, but have a high rolling resistance due to the energy required to deform the tyre carcass when the wheel rolls.
-
• #82
But the same tyre in both sizes?
Speaking of lateral stiffness, don't use radial tyres. That's not mentioned, either.

'At the same tire pressure, >
The problem is: we don't use the same tyre pressure. 20mm , 23mm and 25mm tubulars should be all run at different pressures. On the track a 19mm tubular correctly attached to its rim using a non-elastic mastic (such as Shellac or industrial fabric adhesive such as Terokal 2444) and inflated to 10 bar will "perform better" than a 23mm inflated to 8/9 bar. It can be lighter, have typically better aerodynamics and show lower rolling resistance. There is good reason why Conti's no holes bared competition track tyre for wooden tracks, the Olympic, is 19mm. For events such as madison or on cement tracks one wants something with a bit more confort-- wider and lower pressure. That is why the Sonderklasse came in 23mm-- and with the Steher one could even get a 25mm. On the road it's a bit more complicated..

This is regarding clinchers btw.
Anyway, I went for a pair of vittoria Diamante Pro Pista 23c in the end and they seem sticky enough.

im going on LVV for the 1st time in a few weeks. Its my 1st time on a Velodrome, i am hoever used to riding a fixed gear as i commute daily on one. would you have any tips?? (basically i dont want to be a complete noob and not have a clue.)
-
• #86
i have just bought some for my track bike. how did they get on??
-
• #87
I'll find out tonight when they get their first outing!
Check out the LVV terms and conditions to check your bike conforms to their rules but the first session is basically getting used to riding around at various heights and passing people safely.
-
• #88
yeah i have checked and double checked the list lol, just feeling the tyres compaired to conti gp4000 they feel so much softer and grippier.
im really looking foward to having a go. I love riding my fixed gear so I cant see why i wouldnt love track cycling.
youll have to let me know how you get on tonight. -

If you are nervous or unsure do not slow down!

• #90
So speed is key???
im sure ill be ok with it. whats the worst that could happen? i fall off and get a splinter or 2 -
• #91
Splinters are a blessing compared to the rash! :)
If you're confident in riding fixed be eager and get up the ramp on to track for 2nd/3rd/4th wheel. The first 20mins will just be fixie 101 lesson, starting/stopping on the rail and rolling around the bottom.
Then coach will get you gradually higher on each turn until we all rolled around the top.
We didn't do overtaking until the last 10 mins on my taster, and even though plenty of space was kept between riders the nervousness of some meant there was huge yoyo at the back of the line. -
• #92
Well fixie is my prefered ride anyway so thats a good start, just gotta hope that there are really nervious people on my session. im just looking forward to using my planet x for what its for.

Tyres were fine - didn't have any sandpaper but rubbed them with malt vinegar last night as it was all I had!
There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer of best tyre(s) on a wooden track, just a lot of discussion about tyres people intend to try...
