Track Tyres, Indoor and Out

  • They had some of those in a 22mm on planet x for quite a cheap price

  • .

  • I have both types and the only difference I can detect is that one has puncture protection.

  • I've been use Conti Sprinters outdoor for awhile now but am riding Amsterdam in a few months and wondered if they were ok to use. I'd rather not buy Sonderklasse and have them cut to shit on our usual glass strewn track?

  • Anyone have any recommendations for a winter indoor track trainer tyre?
    £20/25 per each limit

Looking for something that will last a while and compound wise toward the softer end of the spectrum.
Tried some road clinchers on track last week and made my arse clinch, slip and slide all over the shop at just about any speed.

    They the deal then?

  • I use those both at Lee Valley and HHV without incident. I think if you read upthread others say same.

  • @keanulooser may have a pair to sells?

  • Right, for some reason we were given 5 of those from our sister shop a while ago, and considering the location, there's no way in hell we can sell 20mm GP Supersonic tyres near the Surrey Hills where everyone is riding on 25mm.

Realised that those can make great track tyres, so here's an LFGSS offer; a pair for £40, how do that sound? it's £90 for all 5 of the Supersonic (£10 saving).

PM me for more info about pick up/delivery.

  • Dramatic_Hammer wrote Dibs one pair and Son the taster session sub-forum, saw a guy at track league slip right down the banking a week or two back, which has inspired me to get the best tyres I can!

Continental Supersonics are good tyres but I am not sure you really sure you want the minimal amount of tyre surface area touching the track as with a 20mm tyre compared to a 23.

  • From the LVV website:-
tyres/tubulars must be 21-25mm wide and must not have coloured tread.

    * shrug  * 1mm going to make that much difference?

  • No, of course they're not. But The Rules are The Rules and one is not allowed to question The Rules or ask why The Rules exist. Because they are The Rules.

  • Rhetorical.

  • .

  • The rules are for the reason I explained, increased surface area. The coloured tread is because two different compounds are used and the grip is not the same. And why you should not be riding Michelin tyres.

danstuff does that answer your question?

  • Just because the coach didn't comment doesn't make it right keanulooser.

As you stated, "for my 1st 4 sessions." The danger with accreditation system is it makes riders think they suddenly experienced. No it does not. It takes practice, observation and listening to become experienced. Just like it does after passing a driving test.

  • Hmm, I hadn't thought of the tyre width rule...

  • Yukirin - is 1mm going to make that much difference?

Yes. And if it is the difference between sliding down the banking and not, then you should take it. LVV is extremely well maintained and is kept dust free. Try riding a dusty track at the pace I see some inexperienced doing at LVV? Do some research on the internet. Ask other experienced riders.

  • @colinsmith123
How do they clean up the dust? I'm imagining some sort of ride-on vacuum cleaner/duster!

  • Continental Supersonics are good tyres but I am not sure you really sure you want the minimal amount of tyre surface area touching the track as with a 20mm tyre compared to a 23.

The size of the contact patch for a pneumatic tyre is not affected by tyre width. In the words of Mr. Schwalbe , under the section 'Why do wide tires roll better than narrow ones?', 'At the same tire pressure, a wide and a narrow tire have the same contact area'. So the amount of 'tyre surface area touching the track' will be same on a 20mm tyre at 115psi as it would on a 23mm tyre at 115psi.
