  • It was that level of sugars that stopped me drinking those things. I'm not particularly knowledgeable on this stuff, but surely that can't be good?

  • No, it isn't. They've done the usual reducing-fat-but-upping-sugar trick. For a recovery drink, that's worse. Better off with moar fat and less sugar.

  • Probably not, but it works for me (I'm currently doing my training on an empty stomach so after a 2500m swim and a 60km cycle I'm feeling a tad hungry). I'll probably need to start using energy drinks once I have lost the weight and start upping the intensity.

On the other hand, 48g of sugars is still ~50% of the recommended daily intake, and I don't have a sweet tooth otherwise. I don't seem to suffer from a sugar crash later on in the day either.

For recovery I should probably give something like SiS REGO a try, that has the following:-

    Typical values per serving 50g
    Energy: 782kj/184kcal
    Protein: 20g
Carbohydrate: 23g of which sugars: 5.1g
    Fat: 1.3g of which saturates:0.2g
    Fibre: 0.3g
    Salt : 1.0g

So for the same protein I'd get half the calories and a tenth of the sugar and fat. REGO is twice as expensive though, and not available in supermarkets/shops all over the place.

[EDIT] Or just 4 weetabix with 300ml of semi-skimmed milk:-

    Energy: 410kcal
    Protein: 18g
Carbs: 66g of which sugars 18g
Fat: 6g (of which saturated: 4g)
    Fibre: 8g

It's the SiS rego I use.

I like it. Seemed to get me through some tough multi day cycling. I like the gels too. Pretty sure the SiS bars have palm oil in them though. Which gives you bad aids or something.

  • Have lost .3kg despite cutting out chocolate and sweets and returning to an active lifestyle.

This is shit as I am frequently feeling hungry and craving sugary things.

Though three or four days ago the scales told me I had gained 3kg. I do wonder how full of shit I can be at times for my weight to fluctuate this much.

  • I'm going with "a lot"

  • ;)

  • I do wonder how full of shit I can be at times...

    Must.

    Resist.

    Comeback...

  • I heard about your croissant habit today James.

  • This is shit as I am frequently feeling hungry and craving sugary things.

It takes me about two weeks to get away from the cravings when I start back on a calorie deficit regime. The hunger never goes, but I'm happy with the hungry feeling.

I do wonder how full of shit I can be at times for my weight to fluctuate this much.

Water too, it's not just shit. I got over this by weighing myself every day but picking one day a week as my "weekly weigh in". I don't obsess about the other daily weights, just log what I see on the scales and look for the week on week trends for the nominated weigh day (Wednesday morning for me as I play 5-a-side every Tuesday night).

My last 7 day morning weights have been:-
    W: 83.7
    T: 84.5
    F: 85
    S: 84.5
    S: 85
    M: 86.6
    T: 84.5

Ideally tomorrow will be 83.0 (and so I'm 0.7kg down on last Wednesday) but I won't beat myself up if I'm not (or even if it's 86.something). It just gives me extra incentive to not eat the wrong things or too much of anything and get back on track the next week.

Played an extra hour of 5-a-side tonight as a friend's team were short of players. Plus no-one was going to the pub, so that's 5 units saved. Bonus.

  • I heard about your croissant habit today James.

Croissants are my drug of choice. I could easily go Full-Late-Elvis on croissants alone.

  • Speaking of which, Lidl need to fucking stop it with their cheap in-store bakery.

    Almond croissant.

  • It's the splash back you need to watch out for when the 3kg payload is delivered.

  • I some how lost weight while we were in Colombia last month. I did very little exercise, yet ate loads. We were at altitude for long spells like Medellín (1540m) and Bogotá (2600m). But in reality our diet was first class, with many homemade tasty meals especially breakfast (paisa beans) and lunchtime (sancocho - variety of wholesome soups)

    My theory is down to:-
Eating a lot of unadulterated fresh fruit with fibre
    Very little wholemeal wheat
    No GM corn
    Very little trans fat consumed
    No convenience meals
Massive reduction of beer intake and no wine

  • Looks like a drop in general food GI, and fat intake.

I under ate slightly yesterday. Then did a pretty tough 2x20 on the turbo.

Making my porridge + REGO + whey protein, I was seriously hungry. So I necked a tin of mackeral. Didnt really help. But it passed the time. Then I ate a really generous bowl of porridge. But that didnt help either. Had to sit there Cold turkey. Telling myself the hunger pangs would pass.

Low GI really doesnt give me the kick I crave :(

  • Large quantities of fresh vegetables really help. Placing a large amount of food inside you makes you feel full simply from the volume and many vegetables are looow calorie. Salads work well (with a small amount of dressing, not loads of Caesar dressing) . Made a stir fry last night; one tablespoon of oil, bit of soy sauce and chilli and the rest was kale, leeks, sprout tops and that kind of thing. Low calorie meal, made me feel stuffed from the sheer volume.

If you want your porridge but don't want to overdo it, supplement it with a breakfast salad. Or replace it entirely with a large breakfast salad.

Large quantities of fruit generally don't help. Too much sugar.

2kg lighter than I was 10 days ago and not starving.

  • breakfast salad

  • There are plenty of nice recipes out there. Some of them have bacon in, if that's your thing.

  • I love salads during the Spring/Summer, when stuff's growing in the garden, but get turned off of them completely during the colder months.

  • Beetroot juice makes for interesting toilet trips.

I'm considering trying to switch my lunch and dinner aound. Lunch is generally higher protein (quinoa, veg & chicken or tuna) whilst dinner is often pasta based. Think I may just be storing the evening carbs as fat currently.

  • This morning: I am fatter

  • I've been very good and virtuous for 10 whole days and I have been rewarded f0r my efforts with no change in weight whatsoever.

    Fuck you, flab!

  • that's so 2014, although I drink the coconut water, when I can get it free..

I usually leave human race events with my entry fee back in coconut water. partly becase all my mates hate it too and grab an armful for me.

I have a tdf bottle bitch style picture from Windsor tri this year with about 20 cartons of the stuff under my tri suit, need to get me one of them special jackets as well...

  • its ok when you remember you have eaten/drunken it, when you forget and piss red after a race, its very scary!

  • If you consume enough beetroot your shit turns red too which can be more than a little disconcerting.
