  • in front of the box with the missus... Not much meat there tho'

  • ...proceed to tell me she finally got it, and then have nightmare about gravity

    Fantastic!

  • Screeners! Screeners everywhere!

  • tis the screason to be jolly

  • birdmans. very good, very close to the bone. ouch.

  • SPOILER ALERT

I've just seen it. His decent is really quite dark. The relationship with his daughter is pretty heartbreaking. Stone is really good. The 1st rooftop scene with Norton... great script.

The continuous shot / timelapse thing is just brilliant. It's only a distraction in that it makes you question traditional cuts entirely!

All the scenes with Keaton + Norton are unpredictable or hilarious or both. The scumbag producer/lawyer is perfect. It does lose a bit of energy as the film goes on - maybe because his (ex?) wife is a bit under-written.

  • SPOILER ALERT

It's a film about a man killing himself. It's not ambiguous, it's just not graphic.

  • The gambler was alright, John Goodman was good, man. Not sure I needed to see him so shirtless, I met him once while I was wearing roller blades, he wore a shirt then.

  • Emma Stone's reaction at the end makes that a bit more ambiguous though. The way she looks up happily as if she can see him outside in front of her.

  • ^ yup s'what I thought

  • SPOILER YO!

I like to think that is her recognition he has got where he wanted to be. Which is a fucking scary and accurate depiction of suicide in my experience.

You couldn't end a film with a literal depiction of his death. You just can't. It would be borderline irresponsible letting people leave the screen in that state, not to mention commercial... er... suicide. It also wouldn't add anything – we're all adults and can read between the lines... except @EB obvs. :P

  • SPOILERS YO

I think in all respects it is a powerful depiction of a suicide, but I don't think her journey from shock to acceptance that he's in a more peaceful place would take place within seconds like that. Though I do think maybe it works like that as maybe his death means she is able to see him in his 'fantasy'. But it is not as simple as being able to read between the lines - the lines aren't parallel, they're all crossed over and blurry.

I suppose this ambiguity and ability to pick it apart is exactly what made the film so great, and much better than showing something in black and white - though that would have been stark and brutal compared to what else had happened so it would have been powerful in another way.

Either way, I have reconciled my doubts about the film since.

  • Hank Pym was a notorious wife beater

  • whiplash:

    fucken' drummers... pfff.

    fucken' sheetmusic jazz... tchoh.

    great movie tho.

  • Blood Ties

It's no Croupier or Shoot 'em Up but it makes a good lazy Saturday film.

  • watched the guest. enjoyed it and laughed at the credit roll.

  • Just watched Fargo again. Hadn't remembered that it's a true story. Amazing film

  • Inherent Vice, completely bonkers but loved it... I think...

  • The best thing about IV is trying to explain the plot to someone.

  • I really enjoyed The Theory of Everything and I don't care who knows.

It's actually not nearly as sappy as the trailer suggests. Plus Eddie Redmayne doesn't have enough time as a fit-and-well Hawking to be annoying. Jones is great, a babe, and hers is really the lead role.

    It's good!

  • Has anyone seen Foxcatcher yet? I read the story of it a while back and it sounds good.

  • IV: impenetrable. gave up after an hour.

Foxcatcher: Characters not interesting enough to sustain an entire movie, would have made a more interesting 60 minutes segment.

  • Foxcatcher: great character studies. It feels truly real in every respect and probably worth watching just for the Steve Carell's creepy Eagle character.

But it's all so bleak, and such a slow burning story... I found it pretty dull.

  • Unbroken... Enjoyed it... Not too bad a job for a directorial debut... Classic gong-bait tho'...
