Even by your standards, this is getting beyond tedious.

Get an Avid SD7 lever and turn the pull setting to short pull and you'll be good.

Thinking about upgrading my hard tail to a front disc. Wanted something a bit 'nice' so I've been looking at used 4pot Hopes and stuff on ebay but I also realise that for the price of a set of new pads for such a brake (which a used brake from the bay will probably need) I could get an entire brand new Shimano Deore brake.

So, big fancy used Hope worth it over a plain Jane Shimano brake?

Why not a single pot Hope brake? X2 etc.

Because you are considering the standard Deore as an option I'm guessing you wont need all the stopping power of the four pot ;)

XTs can be had at good prices at the mo - its a nice brake, and probably a bit easier to maintain than the Hope, if irreparable if it breaks.

Yeah I would definitely consider a single pot Hope - if I can find one cheap enough.

Don't need the extra stopping power at all really, the v brake currently fitted is fine in that respect. The move to a disc would be because I'm thinking the Project2 fork on the bike is maybe a bit spindly for my weight and type/style of riding so I might fit a trials fork I have, this fork has disc mounts and magura 4 bolt mounts. I did consider a Magura rim brake but I figure if I'm buying a new brake then moving away from a rim brake might be good just in terms of reliability and cutting out the worry of rim wear and stuff. That and buying a disc is an opportunity to add a bit of jewellery!

I guess that because the v brake is doing the job just now I'm not wanting to just throw money at the situation so might just carry on watching ebay.

Have picked up a set of XT 4 pots off ebay. Will probably just resell the rear.

Ohh they the old XT ones with IS mounts? Possibly 'tester approved.

Yup, IS mount integrated into caliper. I'm presuming it's going to be a 200/203mm rotor for the front and would be 180mm rear?

Ah bollocks, just seen a set of Hope E4s on retrobike.

Front caliper is for Boxxer forks but I could swap the rear caliper to the front and then sell rhe rest as parts.

If I keep repeating it I might save myself some money.

I'm in the process of restoring some used bb7s to some semblance of functionality again and progress is good. They're missing the bottom cable boot, the small one in the pic below. Are they necessary at all? Bike will be used for city commuting, no muddy cx stuff.

Nope, you don't need the rubber doobries. They just seal the cable off but it will work without them.

Rival hydro - does it come pre-bled from the factory? Are the lines a suitable length? Is the routing external? If yes, then most likely...

I've got some Shimano BR-CX77 mechanical disc brakes which at present are working fine. The bike is currently seeing lots of mud so gets a wash after every ride and most parts requiring oil are getting regularly lubed. This is my first disc brake bike, I'm fine with other types of brake maintenance and lubrication but don't know where to lube these disc brakes. Can some one please advise? Google offers pages of results on not lubing your pads or rotors but not much else.

Yeah I get that they'll work without em just wondered if there's a special tendency with bb7s to suck up grime through the cable hole or why they even have that boot to begin with. Spyres on my other bike has no rubber boots. Maybe it's a personality test like using/not using condoms or something.

no, one of them definitely needs bleeding. Just wondering if I can do it without a kit :-)

theres nothing to lube on them, only thing that can really generate friction in the system is the brake cable.
