How did you create the route, as some sites/ software are better than others.
See here for optimal routing settings

Hi - thanks for the response.
This is with two methods of navigating:
1) via a route that I made via ridewithgps.com, transferring the .gpx file
2) having the gps search for an address and having it route to the address on the gps itself (no gpx file)I can understand method 1 but not really method 2 as it's on the gps itself...?

Thanks for the link - just looked at this and saw this step:
Change Routing Mode to CyclingI had it on 'Cycle Touring' - just changed it to Cycling. maybe this will do the trick? I'll give it a go this weekend.

Also how do I get rid of the default garmin locations such as Garmin Europe, Garmin Taiwan, etc? thanks

• #1606
Select the location , select the location name at the top of the screen, select the pencil/edit icon, choose delete.

Shameless plug for anyone interested in a Garmin Edge Touring...

I've an 800 and 810 that i'd part with if anyone wants one...

Roughly how much would you be after for either?

Hi- I map my rides on ridewithgps.com, download the file and upload it on the Garmin. I've got this problem where the garmin acquires a GPS fix, starts telling me turn by turn directions, but it's about 45-55ft off!
So for example, it says need to turn left on Essex Road in 200 ft ... I will get to the junction where to turn left and it still says I have 45ish feet to go! Any ideas why?
Do I need to calibrate the GPS or something? I can't find a setting to do this..

Is there any viable alternative to garmin yet? I've always thought they were seriously archaic both hardware and software wise. There must be a better option..

I've been itching for a cycling GPS with navigation for ages now but (partly due to this thread) I can't bring myself to buy a Garmin. Have been considering a Mio Cyclo 315 but there isn't a whole lot of information about them online and I don't know anyone IRL who has one. They had a big 4.0 software update earlier in the year which I gather was pretty buggy (standard) but there's a 4.1 release which I think has ironed out a lot of the problems.

What device do you have?. If it is the 800 you need to set the course options for each course .
Sort of like so and ensure turn guidance is on.
Additionally what do you have set in the routing options under system settings, on the 800 you can optimize for bike, car or pedestrian. I have the "lock on road" option set to off. -

Hi thanks for the reply. I have the Garmin Touring model. (not touring plus) I cannot find that menu in that pic you posted for some reason??
-
• #1615
Because it's vastly different, the Touring model is a dumbed down version of the 810.
Have you updated the map via Garmin Express? did you upload the route into Garmin BaseCamp and sync the Edge Touring with it?

Ridewithgps (premium?) offers you to manually define the meters (off set?) before a warning when exporting a TCX course - gpsies does this as well I think.

• #1617
Hi - no I'm not using Garmin BaseCamp - I just downloaded the .TCX file from ridewithgps.com and manually transferred it to the GPS via USB cable. This is the same way my friend with an Edge 800 does so thought I'd try this approach. Should I be using Garmin BaseCamp?

• #1618
Hi - I'm not using the premium version, just the free version downloading the .TCX file. any ideas?
-
• #1619
Use gpx and not tcx, the gpx is more suitable for the edge and touring series.
Using the gpx will enable the device to calculate turns as opposed to arbitrary points as determined by the tcx. (not quite but near enough thats how it works)

Play around with the GPSies track creator as mentioned in this article http://velogps.com/garmin-edge-500-turn-turn-directions-courses/
-
• #1621
Thanks - I did download .GPX previously but then I couldn't get turn-by-turn directions working, plus, the 35-40 ft issue was still there so hence why I tried .TCX.

I use the same device as you, I usually use Garmin BaseCamp to upload and organised all my gpx files, which then get send to the device.
Do you also have Garmin Express?
-
• #1623
I haven't used Garmin Express - I just took a look at it and will download it. I was just doing the manual file transfer via USB to upload the files before. Still doesn't make sense to me... I'll do a factory reset too

This sounds like an incorrect setting somewhere on the device, I beleive the routing options come under the profile menus on the touring series.
Routing Options
From the home screen, selectRouting Options
.
Routing Mode
: Sets the transportation method to optimize your route.
Calculation Method : Sets the method used to calculate your route.
Lock On Road : Locks the position icon, which represents your position on the map, onto the nearest road.
Avoidance Setup: Sets the road types to avoid while navigating.
Recalculation : Automatically recalculates the route when you deviate from the route. -

just did a factory reset - I'll start over and hopefully it wasn't an odd setting. I'll re-copy over the maps. should I use .gpx (track) or .gpx (route)?
If you're solely just want the GPS lark, go for something like the eTrex, or the Edge Touring.
