Anyone know anything about disc brakes?

  • It's highly unlikely they will go off-road -it's fucking hours away to the Chilterns and I'm not driving to ride and I'm pretty sure there's no sick single track in west London..

  • You'd be surprised.

  • Surprise me. Richmond Park? Not surprised.

  • I was thinking Wimbledon common actually - IIRC you aren't supposed to ride the stuff that looks like singletrack in RP, just the basic outer loop thing.

Didn't realise the singletrack had to be sick though. For that you'd need to travel a bit, yah.

  • You can eyeball them from above

Ta. Tried that but I can't tell what's pad material and what's backing plate if you know what I mean? I'll have to take them apart. Not riding tomorrow so probably won't bother. Might see if any of the bike shops in town have pads and slicks for it and then build it up properly on the weekend.

  • Pads might be hard to come by for Mags unless you go to an MTB specific shop, and even then... The £6 sintered ones on eBay or from Superstar are good in my experience.

Thing is, they should be self adjusting for pad wear, so even if you are down to the backing plate the bite point will be the same. It sounds like they need a bleed or need to be 'mobilised'.

  • It sounds like they need a bleed or need to be 'mobilised'.

It could be that. It does look like the pads touch the disc unevenly.

  • I revert to previous advice, buy Shimano.

  • That doesn't fix my brakes.

  • Could be;

    • the pads is so worn out that the auto align does not work.
    • rotor slighty warped.
    • calipers not lined up to the rotor properly.
  • Ed's playing the 'Wind up Howard by suggesting things that don't cause leaver sponginess or that can't actually happen' game.

  • Seemed to fix 90% of customers bike mind.

Good call on that game name though, but WUHBSTTDCLSOTCAH is a bit of a mouthful.

  • the pads is so worn out that the auto align does not work.

    Maybe

    rotor slighty warped.

Nope, wheel wasn't spinning so it was definitely one of the pads hitting the disc earlier than the other

calipers not lined up to the rotor properly.

Possible. I didn't build it, I just threw it together. Not sure how to check.

I reckon first thing is to pull the wheel and check the pads.

  • I reckon first thing is to pull the wheel and check the pads.

And then go and buy Shimano

  • I've spent £800+ on brakes this year. Just BRAKES ffs! I don't want to spend any more unless these really are kaput. Anyway, the front works, who needs rear brakes..

  • You've centred the rotor haven't you? If not, loosen the mounting bolts, pull and hold the brake lever, then tighten the bolts to get the rotor centred.

  • lol noobs etc.

  • @andyp's method work quite well, but there will be a likelihood that this is not enough, and you'll need to adjust it by hand using a white paper to see the pads clearly.

  • whoosh

  • I've not touched anything yet. Waiting until the weekend so I have more time for it all to go tits up. But thanks for the tip. I think checking pads is first step.

  • And then install Shimano?

  • I'm going to put Campag on it now just to annoy you MTB weirdos.

  • Conti tyres too?
