Which fork did you go for in the end?
Got to say I love this bike. It's the perfect combination of practicality and class... a modern gents bike. Out of curiosity if you had a magic wand is there anything you'd change?>
The thorn disc fork.
The changes i'd made would be slightly larger clearances (this is helped a lot by a new fork) and new brakes. Next year i'll be buying some TRP HYRD and compressionless cables which will solve that. I'd also like a dynamo.
oh also a trim click in my front shifter please.

You can always wait for a second hand S700 brakeset if you don't mind the appearance of the levers.
As for trim - replace front derailleur with YAW?
-

I dont fancy the s700, i just have a feeling that if i was on tour somewhere are they went tits up i'd stand no chance at fixing them. Where as the HYRDs' are fairly simple.
will a YAW one help that much? Or should I just buy one of those little chain catchers?

not even cable actuated hydraulics?
-
• #557
Waste of money. Stick with spyres, if that's what you have, with compression-less or just get the real thing.
Hydraulic is too good.
-
• #558
I've got the hope system, but its a bit of a 1st gen faff. Not the easiest to set up or maintain, and let me down a little when touring.

Spend your money on hydraulic and you won't regret. I think everything in-between is just that, an in the middle. Just save up and buy the proper thing, or make do.

The HYRDs I have on my Croix de Fer have performed admirably. I run them with compressionless housing and upgraded pads. The stock pads are not great - I replaced mine after circa 200k and it noticeably improved performance.
I haven't ridden a road bike with full hydraulics so can't compare but the HYRDs are a big step up from the full cable disc systems I have used.

HY/RD's are exceptional for what they are. Expensive, but exceptional. I wouldn't compare them (Or any road hydraulic for that matter) to the 1 finger power of Saint's or the Modulation offered by XT's, but they are really good for what they are. Even with standard cables, I could endo confidently on freshly installed ones.

You ride with a Hope system and worried that the full hydraulic will be problematic.

I must admit I skimmed past this thread because another cdf.. But I wish I hadn't. This is great!

HYRDs might seem cheap compared to upgrading the entire groupset to be compatible with Shimano/SRAM hydraulic systems which are all (I think) 11 speed.
-
• #565
My thinking too.
-
• #567
The SRAM S700 full hydraulic system is 10 speed.
-
• #568
Very true - hadn't spotted that. SRAM's website says 10-speed.
Can't see them for sale in the UK anywhere though.
-
• #569
Also possible to use the 11spd Rival hydraulic with 10 speed drivetrain too (rival is cheaper than s700).

becuase I dont have 8 foot long arms, those hoods are enormous

I still haven't got bored of emergency stopping every time I need to slow down to a dead stop. Every time I push the limit on waiting longer. And with one finger I can endo seated, without even using much of the stopping power. Coming down a 20% grad. today in the wet, no issue, one finger is enough.
For me the awesome thing about hydraulic is automatic pad adjustment. That was the biggest bane for me. Always fucking adjusting and always having run. Honestly, I'll now take this for granted. Pads should auto adjust as they wear. I couldn't go back to non hydraulic now.
HY/RD will be better, but i'm saying, if you're going to spend some money, see if you can get hydraulic. I guess as you're 10sp and it'll be more. I didn't really think about that factor.

11 speed sram have same cable pull as 10 speed sram.
Just need to set the screw limiter.
-
• #573
They're hardly big, skinner than the SRAM hood that's for sure.
It's the cheapest full hydraulic system you can get, and outperform the most expensive cable disc.
Brakeset including rotor and adaptor is under £200.
It also transpired that you can replace the TRP calipers with a Shimano MTB one, thus finned pads.

Who knew stopping could be so much fun?

Just pull the brakes harder. Are your hands made from marzipan?
you could still complain.
