  • That seat cluster! Thing of beauty.

  • 650b conversion ran into this issue:

Those are 73mm drop Tektro R559s. Is Dia Compe 750 center pull my only hope? They claim to have 78mm drop which seems like it'll just do the job.

I've never done center pull/canti etc. What is the way to hang the cable for front and rear brake. Front solution if above headset needs to be as thin as possible as there isnt much steerer.

  • Hah! what frame is that?

  • You didn't measure 19mm did you @amey :-(

I've sent you a link from Sheldon's page on brakes. There is an IRD model that might work and different specs for the center-pull you mention. Read before buying.

  • Rychtarski

@miro_o I did measure .. it was 19mm exact when I measured; its is very 'on edge'

  • You measured 19mm from the top of the pad setup for 700c?

If you had measured (as above) you'd have known those brakes weren't going to cut it.

Unless the rim is far wider, or the caliper is spaced further from the brake bridge I can't think what else can be variable and fuck with the 19mm difference.

  • Also... wrong thread.

    Non-functioning bikes. >>>

    :P

  • you need centrepull, use the surly hanger on the rear and a fork mounted one the front, did the for @ecunard cantis' and her frame is tiny, maybe 49cm

  • any pics?

  • It is just by coincidence (abet a front) that I have a Paul Racer centerpull in black that @amey can have.

    However they max at 67mm.

  • Is Dia Compe 750 center pull my only hope?

They're cheap enough., replace the brake pads and fit low compression/compressionless housing and you're sorted.

  • Thanks for the offer but Paul wont work I need more reach than 73mm .. I think I'll get Dia Compe and see how they work.

Best solution for front and rear brake cable hanger?

  • Does it have a seatpost collar or integrated?

  • integrated and front one needs to be as thin as possible

  • Easy.

If it doesn't fit in the gap, file it down until it's thin enough, and get inline cable adjuster near the cockpit.

Best to make sure the cable go through as smoothly as possible on the seat clamp, putting cable adjuster on there will make it trickier to adjust and may cause some friction.

  • Wow, that is some serious drop... And I felt my choice was limited going down to 700c!

  • I have a feeling @36x18 might have some

  • maybe this

  • Actually just fitted tyre on the front wheel and the front brake is absolutely fine; think I'll keep it that way and get the Dia compe for rear with the hanger @edscoble suggested above (already have swisstop pads and compressionless cables)

Is there a benefit to the surly one?

Grand Bois Hetre on VO Diagonale rims measure about 36.5mm for now; reckon I could get even thicker tyres in there but I'll stop for now ..

    Initial mock up/current state:

As soon as I get the rear brake sorted I will complete the build; its getting silver 5800 gearset (11-32) with matching silver hubs and when it wont need locking it'll have Rotor P2M cranks otherwise the ones in picture.

  • Maybe get bigger wheels?

  • Sorry for a (probable) daft question...does converting to 650B on a track frame mean I could squeeze some winter rubber in - like continental winter contact 2's into a Specialized Langster?

  • Nice find. Just a set of these on the rear @amey and all's good.

  • continental winter contact 2

    That's not a 650b tyre...

  • Ah didn't know it didn't come in that size..I just grabbed that from memory as an example.
