  • If I understand correctly the distance selling regulations were replaced in June 2014 by the The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 - are there any significant changes for me buying stuff off the internet?

I cant find much info online surprisingly.

  • Question on a loose crank arm. Brand new miche bb and miche primato crank, ridden on for 3 days, less than 5 miles. I noticed something wrong and cycled for maybe twenty more metres before stopping and noticing the left arm has come loose. Any advice? Looking around on the internet the consensus seems that the crank will be done for good now.

  • Sound like your LBS didn't tighten the cranks on properly.

Time for a new crank arm, shouldn't be difficult to get.

  • Because it's not actually sealed.

Why do you think it is?

  • Self installed so no one to blame but myself. Fingers crossed evans don't check returns too closely. But to be honest I think it's probably not even worth trying for a refund.

    Thanks for the reply.

  • It's easy getting another non-drive cranks for a tenner, the hard part will be finding a 165mm one.

Go to any bike shop and ask if they have any 165mm left cranks arm, and perhaps worth asking them to ensure the bolt are correctly torqued onto the cranks.

It's also worth greasing the spinel a tiny bit (anti-seized) to ensure a good fit.

  • Thanks for the advice. I think I'll risk a postal return (worst case I have to pay postage), and if that fails probably replace it. Costly mistake but one I won't forget. Cheers.

  • It's a little bit unethical to return a damaged item that you've cause I'll be honest.

  • Are you sure it's screwed? I was 5 miles from home once when my nds crank arm came loose. Had to use 2 alankeys side by side to tighten as I didn't have one big enough but couldn't get enough torque on it. Had to re-tighten every quarter mile or so but carried on regardless (desire to get home > cost).
Anyway, tightened up properly when I got home and never had another issue with them.

  • ^^ An angel got it's wings today

  • I don't know, but this way I can check at the shop and if it's fine then I'll cancel the order/get a refund. I'll get an lbs to put either set on regardless of outcome.

  • "It's also worth greasing the spinel a tiny bit (anti-seized) to ensure a good fit."

Controversial... I was under the impression that these were not meant to be greased... paging @mdcc_tester

  • Utter novice question: On a Specialised Allez from 2008, stock except for Shimano RS11 wheels and replaced shifters, I want to replace the entire groupset with 105, preferably 11 speed. With a bike thats 6 years old, are there going to be any compatibility issues? It's all stock Shimano including the BB which is Hollowtech I think.

  • You should be fine. BBs have got ridiculously complicated, so make sure you get the right cranks and BB for your frame (I assume it's a standard English BB shell?) but otherwise everything else should fit without problems.

  • Nice. Cheers.

  • Ha! Nice. Merci.

  • BB on frame may need facing if it has paint on the outer faces

  • disk braks on a charge plug - viable? it's all about the hubs really, innit?

    /i don't even braks

    /asking for a friend.

  • it'll be fine. just crank the bolt up nice and tight and carry on riding

  • if they just want front disc, buying this fork http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/FOOOP12/on-one-pompetamine-fork and a disc front wheel is easy enough.
If they want disc braks on the back the frame will need to be modified

  • You need disc brake mounts on the frame, which could be added by a framebuilder/repairer in theory. In practice, however, it's not worth it, as the torsional forces exerted by a rear disc need to be factored in when building a frame, so if the frame wasn't designed for discs you run the risk of breaking the frame.

As @laner says, adding them to the front requires changing the fork (plus a new wheel and front disc brake).

It'd be easier, and cheaper, to sell the Plug and buy a new bike with discs.

  • thanks chaps, that seems like sound advice. i shall now pass it on and claim credit for its wisdom.

/edit: does the pompino come ready with front and rear disc breaks mounts? hard to tell from their interwebsite. any recommendations for a frame kitted out thusly?

    //edit: pompetamine! of course!

  • the pompetamine does, but currently is only for sale in the USA planet X store...
