next up was the main event.
with the weather worsening it was great to see that people sticking around in the green cages.
Emmet the carrot thrower was reffing again. his voice akin to that of sly stallone in Rocky after all the calls from the 1st fixture were beginning to take there toll. he had informed me that it is a cold and lonely place being a top referee but it was a burden he was happy to carry for the evening.
Chukker D looked nervous in the stands, he had money riding on this, how much? too much! after making the same bet twice with different people he had £20 riding on clerks to take the win rather than the previously thought £10.
as the game got underway it was the same again with both teams more concerned with not conceding rather than pressing for a goal. The main difference i noticed from the off however was that both teams seemed to be playing better as units rather than trying to achieve individual success. both teams having great communication and some impressive passing and moving with runs that seemed purposeful and thought out. Cleeeerks' felix netting 3 in the 1st game to phil from westways 1 but it was tight throughout.

the second game started dramatically and completely the opposite to the 1st with westway scoring straight away and then the reply with jimmy the hyena scoping out a triple BB beauty. all this happening in the first 30 seconds of the game. westway were pressing hard in this one and managed to get in the lead for the 1st time.the crowd erupted and you could feel the intensity of the game rising and the crowd responding and feeding from it. as tempers were starting to get flared you could feel that there was more than just points on the board at stake here..... (and chukkers £20). calls were getting called more frequently and Emmets voice was really starting to pay the price. Clerks responded with some great 1-2's and felix levelled up the score with a sweet topshelf back hand of the post, felix then put the clerks back in front to end this bout, 3-2 clerks, Chukker also could breathe a sigh of relief as the bet had been won.
the good thing with the league this year is that you can still take some points home even if you just win one battle but lose the war ,and westway did not disappoint, coming out guns blazing in the final match, phil scoring two, one of them being a screamer and it was felix's turn to put the ball in his own net .he replied with 3 goals in the westway net also with vit collecting an important goal. this game finished 4-3 westway. i was really impressed with the pace of this game and people commenting that ties like this is what the league is all about. non polo spectators were stopping and watching as the game had everything and the crowd participation was the icing on the cake.
MVP has to go to felix who put away 8 out of the 9 clerks goals and was the difference between these two teams. great night of polo and hope to see more like it

  • Great write ups, Chris.

I know it's such a cliche, 3-1 is a close score, but still doesn't reflect how close that game was!

With one westway attempt at goal ruled over cone height, it could have so easily gone differently!

And in the later game, of the goal mouth scramble where the ball rolled across the face of goal and got pushed into and through the inside of the cone, but the cone having moved away from it's original position, so the ball didn't actually cross the goal line!

All the while about thirty people shouting, cheering and geering!

    Great game great atmosphere

  • Fantasy bike polo league eh chukker?

  • Fantastic write ups Chris.
And apols to those who lost money.... Sorta.
    I heart league polo

  • There were so many close moments in that game, it's probably the most exciting fixture I've played! I turned to look at the crowd at one point and seeing so many people cheering and jeering in the freezing cold on a rainy night in a grim south london backstreet and remembered why I love polo so much.

I will really miss Victor now he's leaving for greener grass.

Clerks and Westway have had similar team abilities since Clerks formed, and all this healthy friendly competition has resulted, over the past year, in pushing each other to be better teams and players.

I hope WestWay stay together and find a supersub replacement as committed to fun but competitive play as Victor has been. Westway have been a credit to the London bike polo scene since they formed and are an example to beginners or new teams forming.

    :')

  • grim south london backstreet

  • Cheers to @Whisk for the write ups

  • I guess.... I wouldnt wanna spend an hour standing around without a game to watch, mind

West way seem to have been at every uk tourney since they came together and have only got better and better! See you soon Victor, save travels.

I agree with all that have been said! I'll miss the league so badly! (you too @citygent! jaja)

I hope this is not a good bye but a see you later!

You all will have a sofa were to crash in Madrid!
