Which Groupset?

  • SRAM is rarely discounted, and even the trade prices are rubbish. Basically - if you want it you have to pay the asking price.

On a side note: is there a thread about cables?
What does everyone use? I usually run jagwire pro racer or the cheaper ones, but have found them a bit stiff. Recommendations for other cable sets that don't cost £100+?

  • Lifeline Performance compression-less from Wiggle nice and not pricey with bonus of anodised black inners.

  • Dura-ace.

If you get your LBS to do it you only pay for what's used (rather than buying a kit) and I find it's usually cheaper. And they have better cutters/skills.

  • @amey I thought the LL cables were supposed to be quite stiff and fray easily when cutting?

@miro_o can't go wrong with DA.

    Anyone tried the Jagwire Elite?

  • Interested in the cable issue too. I have the new 5800 ready to mount. Will the benefit of upgrading the cable set to something like DA be really noticable or will the one provided be pretty decent too?

  • Cables are so 2014!!

But jagwire was fine for me. But could spend a bit more and get top notch ones.

  • I should add that this is for a winter bike, so well sealed cables preferably.

Anyone used these XTR PTFE coated, sealed cables? I also like that they come in black, rather than just grey like the DA ones.

  • What do you use? Magnets?

  • @amey I thought the LL cables were supposed to be quite stiff and fray easily when cutting?

My Lifeline compressionless cables were stiff but they didn't fray at all. Though, I cut them with a dremel.

  • Will power.

    This.

Shimano hydraulic Di2 shifters is cheaper than the entry level SRAM S700 10 speed hydraulic shifters.

Brake or shift cable? I've recently fitted a Jagwire Road Elite Sealed brake cable set on the girlfriend's winter bike, and I'm impressed with how silky smooth it feel, with nifty feature to keep it sealed, it's not obvious the first time round on how to fit it, but five minutes in reading the instruction should sufficient.

  • ahhh 9000. Well. That's that then..

  • If you want non-sealed the dura ace 9000 ones are the best, polymer coated, very smooth (I have some in black for sale for those interested)

If you want sealed and true compresionless then alligator I-links are a good, cheap (especially in the long run) alternative to jagwire elite links

this review will be interesting to those who care

  • Merlin are also selling 6800 polymer shift-cables.

I've not used that but it's probably the same as 9000 available in fewer colours.

  • Good shout. Why would you ever want anything other than black?

  • Regarding SRAM, I notice you can get a full Planet X RT-57 with Force 22 for £999 (http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FBPXRT57FORCE22/planet-x-rt-57-sram-force-22-road-bike)

The RRP of that group is over a grand, although Merlin have it discounted to just over £500, but out of stock.

You should be able to strip it and shift the remaining parts for...£300-400(?) I reckon, meaning you get a brand new Force 22 groupset for £600 if you're clever.

  • Genius.

Or could buy if from someone else instead.

    ;-)

  • But then he's not EARNED it :)

EDIT: actually try getting that Fudges offer to come out at £569 with in-stock parts

  • Just check ebay, force 22 can be done for under £500 new

  • £650ish...

but just imagine selling all those parts to recoup your outlay using my method!

Way more fun than trawling the web playing with configurations. Although you also need to assume the Planet X bike is exactly what you want.

    what are you talking about??
