I think the if you want to go for threadless cogs, Halo isn't the way to go, I've heard stories of the hubs failing due to Steel sprocket fretting the aluminium hub body.
The Level cog system was awesome, not sure if its still around, the White Industries version is nice too.
I have a 6 bolt ISO setup with a Velo Solo cog onto Mack hubs. Its been on my bike for over 5 years without having to touch it.
Not a massive fan of regular threads/lockrings myself.

the halo threadless cogs work very well wih their hubs, they have a footplate to spread stress along the splines. if you just put a standard cog from a cassette on (it fits, as the splines are the hg pattern) then yes, it will tear through the splines, as all that fixie power braking force will be going through a 2mm or less interface.
there's alot to be said for using bike parts as they're designed to be used.

Evans are opening in Westlegate Tower, the shops at the bottom.
Looking at what they'll be paying their staff i'd expect them to have somewhere close to zero cycle knowledge

I've got no problem with threaded interfaces really, as I rarely use any back pressure (I'm a shit skidder, I run a brake) and I'm far more at home grinding up hills than being all 'fixie' so as long as everything's well greased and properly torqued, my riding shouldn't affect things too badly. I rarely change ratio either, so once the cog's on, it stays on. I was only considering the Halos because I might be able to get them close to trade price from Matt at the DH, but I think i'll just go for the Novatecs. I'd much rather spend less and get normal 'technology' than have to fork out for fancy hubs and a different cog just to allow a slightly 'better' system; counter-intuiative perhaps, but that's me.

HA! shit skidder... #actualLOL

Hurry up and get a new set so I can have your old ones!
Oh, and another lol at 'shit skidder'

Thats Fair comment.
If you stick with threaded, I guess changing GI is easier, most people have a few cogs kicking around.
Trade on Halos isn't that cheap. You'll get a better deal going for some branded Taiwanese hubs.

I understand the larger footprint aspect of the Fat Foot Halo Cogs, But really they need to be an interference fit on the spines on the hubs, If you load up the cog accelerating, and use it to brake too , the cog will move back and forth on the splines, only a tiny amount to start with, but with the two different harnesses of material, the steel cog will wear the aluminum hub away reasonably quickly. I use Fat Foot Halo Cogs on a Hope Hub on my singlespeed winter bike, Great for that, the greater footprint doesn't damage the freehub body like the old modified sturmey archer sprockets I used to use

the cog will move back and forth on the splines
In theory, perhaps, but in practice, I'm not so sure. I've fitted a few of these, and they are TOIGHT. if they can't move in the first place, it can't get worse. Long term product test required!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fretting
that explains it all, I was a Transmission engineer for while, I say splines of gears on an Input shaft completely worn off so the Gear Spun on the shaft, The two parts originally had an interference fit that required a 10 ton push on load.

About standard for fixie skiddah brakless braking then......

You could probably get the full Ultegra Di2 group plus Zipp finishing kit for that money...
-
• #1418
Yeah but SRAM kit is so so so much nicer!
How did you know that I'm planning on Zipp finishing kit?!

Well it's the only option for the discerning MAMIL isn't it? #deckthehallswithboughsofhollytrollololololololol

Stopped in at Evans on my way home from the ride this morning - greeted at the door, and they had a nice rack to drop my bike into just inside, which was an unexpected touch. Seems to be catering to the pro-muters with it's choice of bits - a few nice bikes (sadly no Hoy track) and rammed full with stock otherwise, but almost nothing blingy apart from a BMC teammachine. I didn't see any high end components, in fact, the only thing they had in cabinets that I saw were pedals and lights - no Chris King, no Hope, there was one Thompson post - apart from that it all seemed to be in-house FWE stuff. I didn't look at the front counter, so maybe there was something there, but on first sweep it doesn't look like they stock any components, which is strange. They could be awaiting more stock deliveries, or maybe I just missed it, but I doubt I'd ever need to go there again saving a puncture nightmare (round the corner from work). It is good that you can buy online and then return in store now though I guess.

Popped in on Saturday. I thought they had a fair amount of stuff considering they had just opened. Liked a few of the Pinnacles although they felt heavy on a very unscientific lift test. The Hoy Sa Colbra though......liked that when they released the pics online and still like it in the flesh.

A little off topic, but which dhb overshoes do you have - the regular neoprene ones, or the deep winter ones? And I can't remember, but did you say you weren't very impressed with them? I'm thinking of getting a new pair in the new year to replace my silly ones, and yours looked like a good shape, and also look pretty rugged on the heel and toe?
-
• #1423
@thross they're these ones http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-extreme-weather-neoprene-overshoe/?sku=5360483833
I think in all honesty it's more down to socks that are too thin underneath them!
They're reinforced heel and toe and fit nice and tight around the ankle / calf
I might get some winter boots if it gets much colder as I overshoes are a faff to get on and off!!
-
• #1424
Ah yeah, they were the ones I was looking at. I might just got for it anyway - me feet don't see to get as cold as my hands, so they should be an improvement.

Speaking of that, I rode in this morning and my hands were freezing when I got to the bike sheds then they done that burning when you get in the warm thing. I definitely need to invest in some gloves.
