  • Pain isn't weakness leaving the body it's weakness staying in the body, blocking a vein and trying to kill you.

  • Nope. I don't have any heart issues. Maybe in my brain though?

Not noticed anything other than tight calf.

Fragmin shots? I'll try not to hit my head but shit happens eh?

Are you in medicine or a sufferer? Bit late telling me to move around :P

Why don't airlines mention DVT shit instead of all that waffle about life rafts and slides and shit? Knowing this stuff in advance might actually save your life as opposed to plummeting into the ground at 500mph with your head between your knees..

  • Heal up man!

  • What is INR? What is the goal of a 2.5 target?

Why the weight loss? What did you have to give up? I'm doing exactly what I was doing beforehand, just walking with a bit of a limp and shooting up each morning.

Should I be wearing compression stuff?

  • Any long term effects? Is this bullshit going to ruin my beautiful legs and slow me down?

  • Mine's not that bad. No noticeable swelling - except after I started the jabs and then bashed my shin into the bike and my leg puffed up!

No hot leg or anything. In fact, I could have just pulled a muscle for all I knew before getting the ultrasound. Riding, drinking, eating the same, just stabbing myself and have to see a GP next week. Still have massive bruise where the second jab went in - that doesn't look right but none of the others have done it so maybe I hit a vein?

  • " Increased intake of fruits and vegetables was associated with approximately a 40% to 50% lower risk of DVT. Eating fish one or more times per week was associated with a 30% to 45% lower risk of DVT. Consumption of red meat and processed meat was associated with about a 10% to 20% increase in the risk of DVT but the quintile with the highest consumption of red and processed meet had a two fold increase in DVT risk. "

but other sites say stay away from green leafy stuff - presumably because of the iron thickening the blood? Also not eating avocado or cranberry on warfarin? wtf?

  • @hippy

INR is a blood thinning ratio, if mine goes above 3 then reduce warfarin, below 2 increase it, for me, and many others, 2.5 is the sweet spot. By having thinner blood, when the platelets in my vein renew (tear off) the resultant clot doesn't block the artery. Reduction in consumption of bad stuff (alcohol, saturated fat, sugar, tobacco smoke, etc.) is good for blood vessels, blood pressure, cholesterol, platelet renewal, lessening risk of another DVT.

I'm wearing compression socks (activa class 3) because my calf doubled in girth, bruised, got cankle and swollen foot, and by wearing them it is helping the leg to slowly reduce.

Blood bruisng is much more noticeable when on anti-coagulants.

Yep, foods containing vitamin k inhibit the action of warfarin. Avocado, peas, beans, broccoli, olive oil, oats, wheatgerm. Main thing is to stick to a regular diet and don't binge on anything as this upsets INR levels. • Fuck

  • No long term effects. I never had any swelling either, just massive pain, and i have a high pain threshold.

I too had fucking bueatful toned cyclists legs - that are now jelly like, but thats because i still cant run and take exercise, ive got another op next week, on my ankle this time!

Seriously though, no long term effects. Once youre on the injections, youre safe. The main bit of advice i took from haemophiia dept was to drink more liquids. I never used to touch water, now i try to drink a litre or two a day.

  • I wouldnt worry too much about it. Lots of people get them and don't realise. If you can still ride and walk on it, thats got to be a good sign. Lots of people get dvt's and don't realise.

I couldn't walk on my bad leg when it happened. Ended up taking a lot of codeine.

    • oh, your second jab caused more bruising than the first cos the first jab thinned your blood. Don't think you have veins in your belly? I always had a 10m diameter bruise from every jab, you get used to it pretty quickly...

(you should remember that if you accidentally cut yourself, you need to go 'a and e' i think. Your blood wont be able to clot so well while you take the drugs.)

  • My brother flies regularly and he can sleep no bother. I cannot. I sit there for 24 hours, drinking and watching movies. You can imagine the state I'm in when I touch down...

I spy some sort of pattern. :)

Glad it was discovered. Heal up soon!

  • Yeah, but how come the 3rd and 4th jabs I did myself didn't bruise? #bettererneedleworkthanthenurses

  • Nasty shit Hippy hope you get sorted soon, colleague at work has had a swollen leg due to DVT for some time now :(

  • Even more fatterer!

  • @hippy Just saw this, got extensive proximal DVT in my leg after breaking my heel last year - right up from my ankle to my groin (was misdiagnosed three times in two months). Was pretty grim for the first few months, but back cycling as usual now without any noticeable effects.

Ask your doctors about Rivraoxaban - it's a relatively new treatment I got from haematology at King's. Doesn't need you to manage your levels or watch what you eat, although it's less easy to reverse in case of an accident.

    Hope it heals up soon.

  • Thanks for the tip, I'll ask about it. Next week I'll get onto a GP who should refer me to blood people. It feels a bit better this morning. Not sure if it's because of all the Canopy beer or the passing out on the sofa after a few more bevvies.

  • @mrgumby

do you ever get shooting pains up the affected leg? last two days have experienced a few..

  • Nothing. 100% ok now

  • Wow...
    sorry to hear this.

    Hope you HTFU soon!

  • hippy hippy hippy, this is horrid. Glad you are mending.

Maybe someone is trying to tell you to retire when you are ahead.

Alternatively, if you do the RAAM, you will not have such a long flight home.

  • hippy in reply to @TW

    Nope. They gave me needles.>

    You'll only feel a small....

    [Grabs coat]

  • Booked GP for tomorrow. GPs are such a waste of time.. I already A&E people saying a need specialist blood peeps on the case so why do I have to lose another morning of income and waste someone else's time to get them to write out the same thing? Just delays the whole bloody (sick pun man, fully sick) process.

  • shit man, i only just worked out today what the WC stripes were about and been meaning to pop in that thread to give you massive props

and then get to this. you some multi-coloured mofo right now one way and another.

DVT used to get a lot of press bitd but you don't hear so much about it these days.

but heal up fast and try and enjoy a little well deserved break from the bike.
