@TW, brought a Kindle Fire HDX for my mother whose dropped a couple of not so subtle hints that she would like a tablet, seemed like the cheapest option...
hoping its not too amazon centric for use as a non buying stuff tablet...

It is.

It also has a totally locked bootloader, so rooting & flashing a custom ROM is a bit fraught.

dude what you just said goes over my head, so will definitely go over my mother's as long as she can play games, surf the internet and email people occasionally I'm sure she'll be happy..
