Bike locked and lost keys

  • I'm sure you've all heard this before, but prick that I am I've locked my bike in the sideyard at my office and then lost my keys. Conveniently (stupidly) I had both keys on the same keyring so I've also lost my spare. I asked the facilities team at work if they could do anything, they had one of their maintenance contractors have a look into it, he tried to drill straight into the lock and snapped two drillbits in half, then had a half-hearted go with a hacksaw and gave up. Called the nearest locksmith and they said it'd cost me 100 quid plus parking, which is pretty ridiculous seeing as I put my bike together for half that. It's locked with a kryptonite kryptolock series 2.

Any avdice? If you want to scream "pikey thief!" feel free. I don't think the facilities manger would take too kindly to me lugging an angle grinder into work so dunno if that's an option.

  • Doesn't happen to be one of those older kryptonites you can open with a biro?

  • My office is right next to Tower Bridge so no fire stations are particularly close AFAIK

  • Few videos on YouTube showing you how to open it without a key

  • If you have the time, a good quality hacksaw will do the job. You may need to make two cuts.

As the shackle is sub 12mm (I think), a very long pair of bolt cutters should also do it - you may be able to hire a pair from nearby.

My god those two blokes in the video talk. STOP TALKING AND JUST DO IT.

  • @CheekyJJ dig out your paperwork and call kryptonite for a replacement key?

  • For the d lock element I've heard a scaffolding pole or similar with enough leverage can pop locks with a bit of muscle. (Not racist)

  • It's had a drill put a quarter way through it so I'm pretty sure the locking mechanism is damaged beyond working.

@Howard probably my only option at this point sans building another bike, how long dyou reckon I'd be sawing away for?

@clockwise if I wasn't an idiot I'd have actually registered my key and had it unlocked 2 weeks ago

  • Duno - bring lunch and a thermos.

I'd try to hire a massive pair of bolt cutters - they may do all or at least most of the job with little effort. Bring some muscle with you.

  • You know that sounds like such a ridiculous amount of bother that I might just come back after work with an angle grinder and "steal" my own bike. I'm sure that'll look good, a young black male with a power tool slicing through a bike lock outside an office building in Central London. Anyone ever had to angle grind their way through a lock know how loud it is? I've already got clearance from my office but I know someone across the road would be more than willing to call the police.

  • call 101 and let them know what you're up to, have some proof of ownership on you while attacking it, photo's of you on the bike or of the bike on your phone and some ID like passport/bank cards... Do it in the middle of the day, less suspicious if lots of people around...

And give bolt cutters a go, they can do some serious damage if they're large enough.

  • I have eBay receipts for the brakes, brake cables, chain and the Kryptonite lock itself. The frame is an old one I bought off of my friend (who also helped me build it) as are the cranks, chainring and wheels. I have a picture on my Facebook of it being a build in progress but none of me riding it. Probably not enough seeing as what the police are like, but I'm sure there's CCTV footage of me riding it into work everyday as well so that might help.

  • yeah, something like that, they will/can only knick you if it's suspicious, be upfront and blatant about it and no worries*

*probably some worries but that's life...

  • ring 101 and see what they say, do it from work so the security there can vouch for you...

  • Just hire a cordless angle grinder, it'll be about £15 for a day. Should take less than 5 minutes but do it before 9 or at lunch time if you don't want to disturb your colleagues.

  • If it was someone nicking your bike I bet they could use explosives and nobody would notice anything, try freeing your own bike and Johnny Law will probably start popping up from manhole covers and abseiling down buildings to nick you.

  • Anyone ever had to angle grind their way through a lock know how loud it is?

Very loud and lots of sparks, but you'll be through a lock like that in under 30 seconds, even with cheap cutting discs.

  • Earlier this year I got through an abus granit x with a hacksaw, £2.99 tungsten carbide tipped blade off ebay, 2 bottles of beer and an hour and a half of free time.

At least yours isn't locked on a petrol station forecourt so you've got the angle grinder option.

  • don't even bother trying it with a normal hacksaw blade, trust me on this.

  • on the 5.0 side of things just give them a call in advance and get a reference number, you can just give that to any cops that turn up.

  • That's brilliant guys, thanks for all the advice.

  • any update?

  • There's no internet in the nick ...

  • I reckon if he put a hi-viz jacket and a white hard hat on no one would bother him taking an angle grinder to the lock.
