  • DSLR's are currently not in trend in the video world at the moment primarily as other companies have put out much more interesting offerings with the Panasonic GH4, Sony A7s and Black Magic Cinema with their cameras. Focus has always been an issue and only just about sorted out on some of the Canon models I'm not sure about Nikon. The biggest issue though is sound and the lack of monitoring and XLR inputs. Codecs also have been hampered and led to hackwares such as Magic Lantern gaining a loyal following. But at the end of the day they are just tools. Depending on what type of video you'll be producing should dictate what you look at. DSLR's will not be ideal if you are filming conferences or presentations as they can't film uninterrupted for long periods. The older models would just stop filming and the newer models will split the large file into 3-4 files which may be problematic for some uses.

Great insight, thank you. We currently have a little canon camcorder which is shit, it breaks up footage which is annoying to say the least. Does the black magic do that? It looks like a very interesting option indeed, and very affordable too...

Also I neglected to mention I'm actually recording stuff about 12-15m away

I hear the 800 and 750 are good, but I'd have no idea what's good regarding video. I did a test the other day and it seemed fine.

Cheers +photoben, will do some reading.

  • Been pondering whether or not to get the Voigtländer 25mm f/0.95 (version II) or save money and just be happy with the Olympus 25mm f/1.8. I have not tried manual focus lenses on the OM-D. I guess with the magnification it can work, and f/0.95 would allow shooting in really low light, but the price is high.

  • Does the OM-D have focus peaking? if so, do it!

  • Yeah, the E-M1 has focus peaking. Damn. I guess it needs to be done, then.

  • Looks like a fine lens. Voigtländers last FOREVER and its cheaper than a canon L prime at least :p

  • I always said that there's no reason why you can't use your phone as a proper camera.

@hippy time to merge it with the mobile photo topic?

  • Its like having a thread for digital cameras with sensors below a certain size.

If its a phone pic, just state that, if you feel it matters.

  • Firstly, Hippy can't do anything except go without sleep for 24 hrs anymore. Secondly, it's already been discussed. There is nothing to stop anyone posting a pic from a mobile phone in this thread but they choose to use the phone-specific one. A bit like the cats thread, no one knows why it exists but it does, so why change it?

  • That's simpler, really. Just let the mobile thread die. If it wants to.

  • We'd probably be better off having a thread for posting our photos and discussing them, and another thread for talking* about photography/kit/work.

    *whinging

  • Any photography thread is always doomed to be a bit gear-y. That's ultimately steered by the way people use it though. Its a pretty nice balance in here, TBH.

  • Agree, this is by far the best place to talk photography on that I know. I've tried photography specific forums, but they seem to be full of people who can't take a decent photo if their life depended on it, but knows the tech side inside out

  • 60D - 55mm Super-Takumar 1.8

  • I like that a lot.

  • very nice. Almost got a studio shoot vibe

  • Cheers, glad you like it.
It's part of a huge window front that's been smashed for like the third time since they renovated the building and put offices and high-priced flats in there.
It's just a stone throw (ha ha) away from one of Berlin's most famous squat, so go figure.

  • Ah, the classic regeneration issue. The first / second / third wave doesn't like the wave coming after them, even though they've done exactly the same thing...

  • Concearning the discussion about what kind of threads would make the most sense -
ideally there'd be one for pictures and one for gear talk, but this is not going to happen as people will inevitably talk about gear-related stuff in both. I think it's ok, though I always wish people would post a bit more of what they're actually doing with all their equipment.
Having a seperate phone thread is totally dumb in m opinion, but yes, it has already been discussed, albeit hardly anyone of the people actually posting their work participated in that discussion, but anyways, fuck it.
As @kboy and @well_is_it mentioned this (and the analog thread as well!) is a pretty good "photo" thread all in all.
Thanks to all the people sharing their work and their knowledge, I already learned a lot in here.

  • Yep, I owe a lot to this thread.

  • phwoar.

..what did you mean by this, by the way? too much colour?

    : D

  • Its a word you don't really hear much these days. Was used a lot in the 90s to express if something or someone was "hot".

  • Haha, ok - thanks!

  • @spotter I'm not 100% sure on the Black Magic cameras although I do know that the battery life isn't great on them. That and it really wasn't designed to be shooting for long periods so I'm not sure about the max file length. I do know that the camera eats through batteries and memory cards and you'll need an audio recorder to get decent audio. Here's a review of using it on a shoot Hope that helps.
