Yep, me too. MBP retina - takes about 2 minutes of weird nothingness to wake-up from sleep. Pretty shit and Apple have not released an update yet I don't think.
There's a few little other glitches too - I'm sure they've written in some code to make chrome unstable as now I get a lot more random page crashes or chrome just quitting. Otherwise it's been a reasonably painless update.

I've gone Mac.
My new work computer is a 13" Retina MacBook Pro.
So how do I do all the keyboard shortcuts?

Replace control with cmd, cmd tab instead of alt tab. Cmd-o to open files instead of enter. Everything else is the same or obvious.
-
• #6806
Alt/cmd arrow keys. Cmd-~ (closest I can get on iOS keyboard) switches windows within an app.

Never look back.
Cmd right
Cmd left
Cmd up
Cmd down
Alt right
Alt left
Page up and down on a laptop keyboard is
Fn up
Fn downWhen browsing files, open file or folder = cmd down
Go up a level = cmd upHaven't been on a windows machine regularly for so long that I've no idea whether these are similar or entirely different.

Interested to hear your opinion/experience, given you were a prolific windows/android user

I still find myself using the magic mouse for everything, but then, I'm not a code-enger

On the desktop/laptop I have used Solaris Unix for 8 years, then Windows for 6 years, then Linux for 5 years.
Windows, yeah proficient... but no more than Solaris or Linux.
I guess I'll get used to whatever weirdness OSX is. I've tried a Mac before, but it drove me insane trying to re-learn the keyboard as every other OS uses precisely the same shortcuts.

So growing up I was always told that you don't need virus protection for macs because no one bothers making viruses and malware for them. Is this still true?
-
• #6814
I had my first look at the internet on a Solaris machine... those were the days!
Wipe it and install whatever os you prefer?
-
• #6815
That was due to Apple being open source(?), so not a target as windows was a closed system, and more tempting to hack. However as Apple now very popular, and starting to act like massive cunts (e.g gluing computers together so you can't upgrade them yourself) it's possible viruses could soon start becoming a thing. It's rare, but iPhones have been hit a few times in their history.

Still curious how actually using that thing to do stuff will be like.
Remember the day when I first held an iPod nano 6G in my hand and just though "c'mon".. -

The Mac specific commands are probably the ones worth learning, like cmd + h to hide windows (I use that quite a lot) and cmd + option (option = alt) eject to send your Mac to sleep (presuming your Mac will go to sleep!). Add ctrl to that and you've got the fastest shutdown option for when you need to leave work in a hurry, but bear in mind that it's instant.
Finder shortcuts are handy too. cmd + shift + a will open applications and you can replace a with u for utilities, c for computer, d for desktop, l for downloads (I guess d was taken).

The one that annoys me is in any save dialogue, cmd d goes straight to desktop, but in Finder it duplicates the selected item. Cause of much undoing.

I feel your pain. I have being using Windows to game on my rMBP and its driving me insane, feels so unintuitive and you cant lick on a single damn thing without installing spy/malware and a virus or two.
Had a couple of melt downs and I am sure something is seriously wrong with it still. Had 22gb of temp files at one point and somehow Windows 7 and 5 apps is 48gb? When it used to be about 20 when I first set it up.
I dont want to sound like a fan boy, I actually really like the look of Windows 8, and the Nokia Windows phones look great, but I do hate using Microsoft products with a passion. -

So i have cracked the glass on my MBP..! Anyone know of somewhere in London than can repair this? Previous experience?
I think apple will only replace the whole top half and want to charge me a small fortune.

Have you got a big page file and hibernation file? pagefile.sys & hiberfil.sys
When I was looking at why a clean install of Windows 7 was so large I found that each of those files was set by default to be roughly the same size as the system RAM (16GB each in my case). I got rid of the hibernation file (I don't use hibernation) and cut the pagefile down significantly (it's rare I'm going to be using all the RAM) and got rid of 20GB plus.

I was in Chelsea the other morning and spotted a Mac repair place near the M&S, might be worth a look... IIRC £70 for iPad screen replacements...

Your father in law is not alone - here's some suggested solutions: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6527476
Edit: oops, sorry totally missed when the original question was raised
I'm enjoying Yosemite, seems super stable and I like the icons personally. However:
