  • Not a good idea. I think 4cm is the maximum anyone will recommend for spacers.

Tell that to Super High Stack Courier Guy.

  • If you have to much, you are creating a long cantilever from your head tube to your bars. Thus, big bending moment in the steerer tube. You are risking it yielding and failing all together.

Assuming the hand position is the same, the moment is going to be the same, no?

  • Bit heavy for a folder at 13.5 kg though.

  • called a cyclist

  • Cheap folder weight that much.

  • Not mine.

  • You're right, clearly I'm talking bollocks. I guess what I should have said is that the system with lots of spacers will be less stiff, as you have a relatively narrow long span of tube vs a shorter span with stiff stem making up the system instead. I think the lots of spacers case will deflect more, but you are right, the forces/moment will be the same.

Maybe buckling could be an issue with the longer stack system? Regardless, still don't recommend it.

  • @Tababa most stuff says you could get issues with bearings but if you use a headset with oversize bearings they are kinda bomb proof(FSA pig/hammer/mallet) negates lots of issues and lasts way longer imo. You can get a riser stem with riser bars to take out some spacers.

  • Regardless, still don't recommend it.

I agree - I would guess too that it's not as stiff.

  • Anyone got an .ISO file for Windows 8?

Best to ask the fork manufacturer - lightweight all-carbon forks often come with restrictions in the 40-60mm range, but the stock Pomp fork has a burly enough steel steerer. Bearing in mind than I have a 14cm stem on mine and 30mm of spacers under it, and I weigh 95kg, Tababa's girlfriend isn't likely to give the steerer a hard time unless he's a serious chubby-chaser.

All the other suggestions still apply - get a stem with more rise, and bars with more rise if possible, but only to make the whole thing lighter, stiffer and more pleasing on the eye. The fulcrum against which we're all trying to snap off our steerers is the upper headset bearing, and the only way to move that is to buy a bigger frame.

  • @Howard I think I have a Windows 8 64Bit ISO file. Will need a product key.

  • @aggi Rad - um, will that work on a Paralells VM on a Mac?

  • Thanks all for the replies.

Problem with getting risers or a steeper stem is she has a very short reach and is using swept back bars and a 50mm stem to compensate any changes there would compromise her position.

I think we'll maybe leave it where it is for a while, I am sure it isn't dangerous as such. She probably only weighs about 7 stone and isn't likely to be exerting a huge amount of force on anything.

  • Is a Pomp steerer stronger than the quill on this stem? Of course it is. Conservative steerer limitations are based on 100kg sprinters hauling on the bars.

  • Is there any nice chromed headsets with stack height 39 on a budget of £30 or so?

Velo Orange seems an option at 42 but would prefer an exact fitting one.

  • Never seen Dutch commuters do mad sprints to get the train...? ;)

Cheers, yes, I've seen it come out well in most reviews.

    Decisions!

  • Let your heart speak to you and it will be easy.

  • I have no idea. I can upload it to Google Drive and send you a link.

  • Downside: while easy to clean, it's almost impossible to dry without leaving it lying around somewhere until it dries out by itself.

That's the way most things dry out in my home anyway (bikes, jackets, laundry, cats, dogs, paintbrushes, plants, washing up etc.) I was taught that tea-towels breed germs, so better to allow everything to dry in the air. (Yes, might have taken that a bit too literally.)

  • I was too young and too far apart at that time to know about heart…

I remember it anyway, in Italy was quite popular.

Though nowadays I discuss about heart only with a cup of tea.

  • Should I waste ten minutes of my life trying to put a spare pair of 26" tyres onto some 650C rims?

(Wife's Stupid crap Tokyo Bike comes with 650C wheels and Kenda tyres that have lasted about 500 miles before sidewalls split).
